Live/Recorded TV - Terrible Results using the 30-second skip / 10 second rewind

Upgraded to Plex Pass a few months ago for the DVR functionality, but now that NFL is back this is the first time I am really using it. I set the Thursday night game to record and tried to start watching it about 30 minutes after it started. When I would use the 30-second skip forward button or the 10-second skip back button, it would typically give me the spinning circle for a few seconds and then skip to some completely different part of the recording. Same thing would happen if I tried to click on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Looking at Task Manager, the CPU appears to be fine. I also tried with and without the DVD set to transcode the recording and it did not seem to make any difference. How do I get this to work? I’m watching today’s recordings using VLC (to play the file in the grab folder), but not a great long-term solution.

I have Plex Pass also… as I am trying to see if Live TV functions better than the SageTV software I use. One of the biggest problems is the results of 30- second skip /10 second rewind. Here is the testing issues I have found:

Plex is currently recording a College Football game and I am watching it about 1 hour prior to Live.

  • I started watching the game at 1 hour prior to live
  • Then I watched the first drive in the first Quarter until first commercial
  • I skip 30 seconds (lots of buffering) the skip sends me to the first drive of the first quarter NOT 30 seconds forward
  • I hit skip 30 seconds a second time and then it skips 30 seconds forward (lots of buffering) and then resumes
  • Subsequent skips go 30 seconds forward from there.
  • This problem repeats it self after watching the game for about 1 minute in length.
  • The problem also happens if I use the mouse to skip ahead which would be more or less than the 30 second skip.
  • If I have watched the game for more than 5 minutes or so typically the 30 second skip works fine I have only seen this problem when immediately watching the recorded program.

It is really annoying to have plex go back to the first place I started watching the game and then subsequent skips have to be hit to go forward through the commercials.

Second problem:
Plex gives the option when trying to watch a live game to start at the beginning of the recording or to start it live. However, if I select to start at the beginning of the recording Plex takes me to live briefly and then (lots of buffering) goes to the beginning of the recording. This is bad since I do not want to see the football score yet. ARGH.

Thanks for looking into this.

For what it’s worth - I have jumped ship entirely to Channels DVR for live/recorded tv. It’s $8/month ($6.xx if you pay for a year, no lifetime option unfortunately), but it just works. Like I had it up and running in less than 10 minutes. Watched the Thu night game and it was perfect. I like it so much I bought an AppleTV yesterday to use on my main tv. And for my desktop, their web interface works fine.

I’m kind of pissed about paying for Plex Pass (and even thought about asking for a refund), but I’ve used Plex for years without paying a dime (other than some app purchases maybe years ago), so I’ve decided to let it go. And I’ll still use Plex for my downloaded/ripped tv and movies. But I am going to be using Channels for the foreseeable future.

This!! I want Plex Live TV and DVR to work since I have paid for the Lifetime Plex Pass, but it pretty unusable for me. Live TV takes several second (sometimes up to 10) before it tunes and that is when it tunes to a station although I routinely get errors. Channels DVR works awesomely. Channels tunes in stations almost immediately. I wish there was a Lifetime pass for Channels or it was more in line with $5/month but it works and worth the extra expense.

I am having the same issue with football games. I used to love using DirecTV dvr to start watching a game about 1 hour in and I could FF/RW and literally skip every commercial.

Plex sucks with this feature. That being said, if the recording completes and I watch it later…RW and FF work well.

I think it has something do do with how it is transcoding the recordings during live broadcasts.
