Live TV and DVR 1080i 60fps on Apple TV poor

Hi,

I’m fairly new to plex but I’m trying to cut the cord and move everything over to plex to stop paying for Sky.

Currently I’m running plex in my synology NAS 920+ within a docker container. I usually stream to an Apple TV all on the same network and all hard wired on a gigabit network. I’m running the latest version of the server and the app.

I’ve just setup live tv and dvr with a new HDHomeRun flex quad tuner. When I view the HDHomeRun direct from my TV all is fine quality is as good as expect and the framerate seems the same as sky.

When I view live TV via plex it looks like the framerate of the content is slightly lower making the picture not 100% smooth and slightly judder. It’s not buffering just not smooth like it should be. The same happens for the dvr recordings. I thought it might be the Apple TV but the same happens on all devices. I have checked that it is using direct play and it is so there is no transcoding happening.

Does anyone have any idea what’s happening or if I have missed a setting somewhere?

Thanks!

Ok I think I have put out what the issue is but I have no idea how to resolve it. Some live tv is broadcast at a higher frame rate in the uk. It seems that sports or game shows seem to be the issue as the frame rate is higher which is why they look a bit juddery. Films and normal shows looks fine as they are filmed at 24/25fps game shows I believe are a little higher maybe up to 30fps but I can see the plex
Player is displaying it at 25fps still.

Anyone have any ideas? And help would be great. Thanks

Right I think I have narrowed the problem down to my Apple TV! It seems the 1080i content isn’t playing correctly. I have also found this seems to be a common thing with the Apple TV as it can’t handle deinterlacing the content due to lack of cpu power as it doesn’t have any hardware to handle it directly.

I have an apple tv gen 1. Does anyone know if the apple tv gen 2 can handle the live tv interlaced content? Or if not any other option? We have apple everything so ideally want to stick with it but I want to cut the cord so I must have live tv and dvr from plex.

Thanks

Thanks

I had this same issue with Fire TV stick. The NVIDIA Shield however works great in 1080i/576i and so does the LG WebOS version.

Thanks. Yes I have gone to a Shield and it’s working well now. I just have a few random stutter issues sometimes so just working it out!

All can someone look at this from the plex team? It seems the Apple TV can support de interlacing but it just hasn’t been implemented. The Apple TV content for 1080i 60fps still looks awful and plays at 30 fps.

Nvidia shield with plex seems to crash alot so not happy with that either.

Good luck! I sadly don’t think they care or they’d be asking questions to sort it out! I’m guessing you’re in the UK? If so it’ll be 50fps, not 60fps. :slightly_smiling_face: Personally the DVR section feels very much like it’s still in beta!
Cheers,
Tim

Thanks but does this mean there is a fix or do we just to wait for them to include the ffmeg?

I just want one streaming device and at the moment I have a shield which crashes with plex a lot or Apple TV which can’t play the 50fps content.

Not ideal.

Since you have a hdhomerun you can try the official HDHomeRun app or the Channels app to compare

High Frame Rate content (50 fps in the UK, 60 fps in the US) is a problem for Plex on Chromecast w/Google TV as well. The device can clearly handle it, as can the TV.

The app is doing something wrong.

Yes. This really needs looking at as I believe the Apple TV 4K gen2 also seems to have the issue
