Live TV and DVR – Now out of Beta

The app release is a staged roll-out, so it hits different people at different times. But just like always, if you have a Plex Pass you can download the APK right now and side-load it. Read the release notes to get the link.

Thanks that got me working on my Android devices… works on my Pixel-C tablet and my Galaxy s8+.

Isn’t it ridiculous that the Plex marketing team fires off emails to all saying “Apple TV now has Live TV” (and another email for android) before The App update is even available on either App Store? Still not available here in the Australian ATV App Store.

Heck they haven’t even posted in the ‘Release Announcements’ part of the forum where the tech savvy Plex users hang out yet they send email out to all Plex users trying to drum up business.

And now they claim it’s out of beta? WAYYYY too early to call it that based on all the issues being reported (and mostly ignored) in the forums.

Clearly the marketing team couldn’t wait to drum up subscribers and started selling it before it’s even available to download.

I was glad they announced it because it was available for me and I’ve been waiting for this.

Can you View LiveTV on Android phones and tablets if it can where do you get the latest updates as none of my Android devices shows livetv ? Shield is working OK.

Yes I can view on my droid phone… I am right now as I type.
play store has the updated app

I just unistalled and re-installed from play store still no LiveTV option.

Apps in the store tend to roll out over several days - it just showed up for me this AM. Give it a couple days and you’ll probably see it.

I don’t think it’s production quality yet. Since 1.6 every release at least for me has some of the same recording issues that others mention, particularly that sometimes shows just get “stuck” and say they are 100% recorded, but still show as recording and stay that way forever. After which there’s a cascade of recording failures since it appears it leaves a tuner tied up until you restart the server, at which time the show just disappears. The current release seems at least a little better in that regard, but I still see it happening.

In the email I received it said “Note: Android updates roll out over 48 hours to Google Play Store. Be patient, you’ll have it soon!”

Thanks … I side loaded the APP it is working on all my Android devices… They have really done a lot of work in this release … I was able to watch the same channel on 3 different devices both locally and remote and it only used 1 tuner…

Same issue, another update. Android v6.3.1.1317. Same issues with live TV hanging, HDHR app works

I have to give them credit they’re pounding out the updates

still on 6.3.0 here. did they fix the Live TV transcoding issue yet (at least with Android mobile). It is (was?) stuck at sending out the full incoming stream quality and resolution, not giving you any options to change it either manually or automatic.

Another Android app update. 6.3.2.1332. Same issue with Plex Live TV - orange circle hang. Tried different players. HDHR channel still works.

Since the 1.7.6 PMS update, with the change back to .ts files in the PVR, Plex for Android refuses to play them (spinning circle forever), however they play fine through KODI/SPMC even via the Plex addon for Kodi. All Plex products updated tonight and the behavior is the same. Not general release ready IMNSHO.

BTW @kegobeer-plex I left those log files of this issue you requested back here https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/280676/is-no-one-else-having-trouble-with-plex-playing-the-ts-files

Plex,

I would like to start by saying THANK YOU for finally getting into the LiveTV space for the Apple TV! We have 4 AppleTV’s floating around the house, and have been forced to rely on Channels up until now.

Having said that, I do have some concerns/questions:

1.) I upgraded last night to the latest version t enable the LiveTV. I was able to connect my HD Homerun Prime w/ CableCARD without any issue, select the channels I wanted to make available in the guide, and get LIVE TV working. But, it doesn’t appear as though there is a traditional “guide,” only a running list of thumbnail pictures of what is currently showing on the channel. This makes it hard to scroll, filter, and scrub ahead to schedule recordings for future times. Am I missing something obvious?

2.) Curious if there is not an easy way to tell Plex where to store the DVR recordings. From everything i’ve been able to find online, it appears as though it stores, temporarily, the recordings in the same library folder you set for TV Shows, converts (post record), then saves the files there. Is there not an option to set a DVR recording target, then enable Plex to move the converted files to the actual library location for TV Shows? For example, if I wanted to enable DVR recordings to land on an SSD for quick access, and much faster conversion times, then move them to a Drobo for example for long term storage?

Hope to get an answer today if possible.

Excited for this new capability.

Thanks,

Matt

Your Android version may be too low. I know several people were having issues in another thread with device software older than 6.3. Have you tried forcing transcode and/or using an external player?

I don’t think this behavior is intended though and is likely a bug.

Agree on the bug. No option to upgrade Android. Bummer. It is trying to transcode, not sure how to change that option.
Bombs on external player (latest version), hangs with orange circle when trying Android player or unchecking Android player and external.

From previous post, this is what I try each revision:
My experience (PMS 1.8 Windows and Android App 6.3.X) is the android application either hangs using ExoPlayer2, (spinning orange circle) or quits unexpectedly when choosing either Android player or external player. Newer versions - HDHR channel works. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling android app, no change.
