Live TV and recorded TV playback stutter, buffering, and pixelation using Plex Server 1.18.0.1846

Which Roku are you using? Also, if you’re using WiFi, what’s your setup. 1080i broadcast TV takes a bit of bandwidth to stream reliably.

Streaming Stick+
wifi 82.11ac on a gigabit network. Most laptops and devices will have around 300Mbps for both down and up - so I don’t think it’s an issue with bandwidth. I’ve checked the Roku network check settings and usually it is around 50 - 65 Mbps.

I think the Roku Streaming Stick + is just weak with both signal strength and ability to transcode and just falls over with too many requests rapidly.

We have a Roku TV and 2 Streaming Stick+'s and watch live TV with no issues. There is a problem that’s been reported about the stream dying when direct streaming MPEG2 (get’s stuck buffering at 33%), but this is solved for us by having PMS transcode MPEG2.

Anyway, no problems with live TV using Rokus on WiFi for us, that’s why I was asking about your setup.

The problem is only with 1 channel @ 1080i. What HDHomerun model do you have? From what I’m gathering the EXTEND probably wouldn’t have the issue.

I do occasionally see the direct stream freeze at 33%, but setting plex app settings to 12Mbps and turning off the transcode while recording appears to have also resolved that.

Using a Prime 3 as we have cable.

The 33% thing has only ever happened when I’m direct streaming MPEG2 live.

Yes, live is what I’m referring to. The issues were only with watching live.

Even with the 1973 update, the skipping and pixelation continues. I can confirm, when there is a skip in the recording that is when the chromecast reboots. Please let us know you’re looking into the issue, as the DVR fuction is useless at this point. Thank you.

Synology 415+

  • PMS v. 18.1.1973
  • 8GB RAM (added some  )
  • CPU barely above idle when playing and recording and security cameras. 25% when also add Backups, virus scan and indexing. Never gets past 60% or so when maxed out, for me.
  • SWEET little unit I am so happy with it

HomeRun Extend

  • HDTC-2US
  • FW V. 20190621
  • (Default Transcode profile set to mobile)
  • DVR recorded video - Plex set to High Quality 30 fps

FYI - All my own video is m4v H264 (some SD, some HD (720p and 1080p) - everything works and plays fine on all devices near and far)
I have had no/none/zero (thank you Plex it has been great thanks to your hard work) issues until I updated sometime back in late summer/early fall 2019(?)

I thought I was alone in being troubled by stuttering and pixelation. Can I ask for a better description to make sure it I have the same issue. I think I may have a wrinkle to add to this.

I have no problems for any recorded DVR material on my older Orca 2016 Samsung TV

I only have problems on my 2018 Samsung UN65NU8000 Tizen 4.0 (plex 4.5.1 app). I tried both the Samsung app and the XBox One plex app hooked to it - same thing.

  1. Yes it gets pixilated/stutters every few minutes but between ‘stutter jumps’ all playback in a show is, um, jittery like poor stop motion or something. Is THAT JITTER, this problem???
  2. Here is the kicker - This happens on all recordings/all channels except one CBC (I am Canadain eh :). Have I gone mad? Is this possible?

The best description of what I experienced is in the example “Match of the Day” video posted above (linky). This issue would appear in the recorded file in addition to Live TV, and an impacted recording file could be taken out of Plex and still showed the issue in other players (VLC, etc). The problem was found to be with the server, where yours is client specific. Have you tried hooking the XBox One up to another TV? Does it exhibit the problem then? If not, that is very insightful if it is actually a display specific issue.

If you don’t get any helpful responses you might consider creating a new posting tagged with your specific clients (displays?) that are problems. I had isolated the problem for this thread to a specific version of the server, so it’s tagged for server-beta.

Anyone else use live tv with Plex on Android tv having issues with pausing and resuming playback. When resuming, I get an error that the tuner signal is weak. I can play live tv fine, but not pause for more than a few minutes. This has been happening for a while.
I am using WD PR2100 for a server Version 1.18.1.1973. No transcoding on a shield and a mi box. I’ve experienced this with multiple versions and for months. I can usually watch live tv for long periods of time with not errors. It’s only when I pause and then resume. I have a roku tv that doesn’t experience this.

This is not the issue being discussed in this thread. You probably want to post a new thread or use the forum search:

https://forums.plex.tv/search?q=pause%20resume%20live%20tv%20order%3Alatest

I posted this in an individual topic at the end of August… I didn’t get any replies… anyway… I’ll try posting there again. Plex Client Can't resume paused live tv after long pause

So what are you on now that it is still ok? I am struggling with it and want to downgrade to a version that is working.

If you’re having issues with a beta release, roll back to the latest public release:

Per the post marked “solved” that worked for the OP (original poster).

Your point in patience is good.
Your example about “think of all the platforms” as justification is not a valid problem.
There are basically four. OS X/Darwin/FreeBSD, Linux, Android (which uses Linux video player so almost doesn’t count) and Windows.

The FFMPG amd MPV for a Linux PC is the same for a Linux NAS. They may have multiple GPU and CPU combos, but for some reason the FFMPG and MPV used in non-Plex servers doesn’t exhibit the issue. Hmm.

Hey guys! The original issue that this forum topic speaks too was fixed in PMS 1.18.0.1944 and is also included in 1.18.1.1973 (which is now the current public release)

I humbly request that if you are having still having issues, to please create a new forum topic detailing your issue so that it doesn’t get lost in this thread.
