Over the air channels stopped working in September of 2024

I have been using live tv DVR for 3 years with no issues. In September my Plex Media Server updated to version 1.41.0.8994. This version would no longer allow my local over the air tv stations to play. I use a HDhomerun and Roku on all my tvs. I finally found a post that told me to rollback to version 1.40.5.8921 which was from August. I did this and now everything works. My question is, do the good people at Plex know about this and will it be fixed in a future version?

They don’t seem to know or care.

Plex staff, can we get an acknowledgment that you’re aware of the situation with OTA Live TV not working?

I’m also affected. TrueNAS Scale server, Nvidia Shield 2017 client.

I paid for a Plex Pass to be able to watch live TV from the Plex interface, which is arguably better than many competing options. Not being able to do so makes me feel frustrated.

Yup, same here. I can get live TV to work when it can direct play. If the transcoder gets involved though, the stream always fails. The server log shows lots of this error:

Oct 13, 2024 15:32:29.600 [10284] ERROR - [Req#2dda7/Transcode/324775b7-bf38-4610-a900-fa9a72bf273e/7c44f9a4-5437-4412-9993-029252a90f6b] [mpeg2video @ 00000242aec17300] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0.

Interestingly, I can transcode video files just fine. Live TV doesn’t work.

Platform: Windows, 12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-12700K
Plex Server: Version 1.41.0.8994
Hardware transcoding enabled
Client: Google TV and Web client.

Can anybody help?

I’ll confirm that rolling back to 1.40.5.8921 seems to alleviate this issue. Hoping that this reply serves as a “bump” on this topic. Similar setup: Windows-based PMS and HDHomerun Quattro receiver…

Same issue for me. I was able to play live TV on some of my devices (Google TV) but could not run on my Fire Stick or web. WinTV-quadHD tuner with Windows 10. Rolling back fixed it for me as well.

Same issue here. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the 1.40.5.8921 version for Windows 10 x64?

(A different thread indicated it was available on github, but I don’t have a clue as to how to extract from a .qpkg.)

I made the mistake of updating the Plex software through the app so I don’t have a local copy. Having learned my lesson, I will download any future versions from the website.

Did you already delete it from C:\Users\ [username] \AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates ? That’s where I reinstalled from…

I see v1.41.1.9057 released. Has anyone seen if this issue is “fixed” in it yet? The release notes don’t mention anything about live TV …

same issue create 2 other threads no reply

I can confirm this as well. I believe based on the logs i saw it is related to transcoder for at least the intel I5 processor.

The version listed above anything more recent is broken

Many thanks to phoneguyinpgh and tchaugland. for your assistance in getting my live TV working again.

I tried v1.41.1.9057 as part of my rebuild, the issue with live TV remains.

I have a similar issue. Suddenly (September very possibly) I can not play Family Guy or The Simpsons on my Roku TV, or Firefox browser. It will play in Plex PC, and Plex on Android. This includes all episodes recorded by my Plex server via HDHomerun OTA, and live broadcasts. So far, this only happens with Family Guy & The Simpsons. I suspect it’s a codec issue, but don’t know how to figure it out. I suspect it’s a codec issue because it plays on some devices, but not others. They are both cartoons, and both recorded from Fox17 in Nashville. Any ideas?

Hopefully, you can see the images that I pasted. This error is ongoing and I don’t think that there is a fix coming from the creators of Plex.
The HDHomeRun app on any device plays all channels, however, even though my local Fox station is at 100% signal quality, it fails to play on Plex - Live TV, as it is pictured in the “playback error”. This was working for years! After the last update, I can no longer record or watch my local Fox station. I have been recording shows from the station without fail for years and until the last Plex server update, it suddenly stopped playing and recording. All other stations are uneffected. Amazingly, all other TV stations will play and record.

Downgrading is starting to look really tempting.
Has that been working for folks?

Yes. I’m on Version 1.40.5.8921

Has anyone tried the new Version 1.41.2.9200 yet?

I think this release note look promising; but I don’t see further details…

  • (Live TV) Use software decoders for livetv transcodes in order to avoid system errors (PM-2116)

Just installed it, sadly still having the issue :-1:
