i have a plex server running on qnap nas. i have hdhomerun quatro with 100 channels. some channels buffer, some do not. the buffering is because of transcoding for those channels from the hdhomerun. these channels do not buffer in the siliconedust native app, or the apple tv app channels. they only buffer on plex.
is there any way to make plex apple tv client act like the siliconedust application and not buffer?
What channels don’t buffer for you? Every one of the 30 I’ve tried does for us.
I too would love to see it stop doing 10+ second buffer (or transcoding or whatever it is doing) for every channel as live TV through Plex is mostly useless to us for this reason. On the Xbox One, recordings are mostly useless as well since it wants to transcode causing starting and commercial skipping to be painful. HDHR app doesn’t have this issue either.
Note that Kodi acts like the HDHR app in the (1-3 second) speed of channel changing and instant recorded content commercial skipping so it is a problem specific to Plex, not inherent with the HDHR feed, that should and hopefully will be fixed.
i only have 1 channel that buffers and thats 3TV in phoenix which is 3-1. Channels app plays everything amazing, but this one channel drives me nuts. I gave up using plex for live TV and just flip back to the Channels app.
When you say buffer, are you talking about the initial time it takes for the channel to start playing or are you referring to intermittent buffering that happens while it is doing playback? I was referring to the former but the latter is also an issue though I’ve not tried to see if it it is all channels or just a few as I assumed it was all. I don’t use plex for live tv due to the initial pain in the ass buffering and the momentary buffering during playback sealed the deal. Again, no other TV app I have does either, and all my equipment is hardwired, so hopefully Plex folks will be able and willing to address it.
Did you find a solution for this yet? I have the same issues and watching TV - live or recorded - via Plex is not possible due to the frequent and extended buffering. very frustrating.
Nope, sorry. I have a htpc as my end point which makes watching completed recorded fine but I don’t both on the Xbox or tv apps. I switch to the HDHomerun app for all live tv and buffering but it can be buggy so not ideal.
I’m seeing buffering or my live tv feed stalls completely about 15-20 mins in. I’m trying to find a direct Plex support contact to help. I have the latest release, this happens on my Roku (wired), across web players, Plex Mobile app, etc. I have checked and don’t see any physical networking or servers issues. I have a Dell T7600 with 2 Xeons, 32GB, and Mirrored drives.
Some channels will play fine others, stutter but there is no pattern. I can restart one that stalled and then it will run for over hour +.
I also never have issues with local movies on hard disk. I can supply logs, to Plex support.
Is there a way to get direct engineer support as a Plex Pass Member?
I also see buffering on live tv and recorded shows on a couple of the HD channels.
HDhomerun app plays all channels perfectly. It is a four tuners and I have had all 4 streaming and it still plays perfectly.
The plex apprears to record fine. It is live tv and play back where I see issues.
The plex webclient is what I have tested with the most but other viewers do it too.
Some of my viewers even play these hd recorded shows fine. I am guessing those are not transcoding for whatever reason.
If I lower the quality down to 3mb 720pHD on the web client it will not buffer. This seems oddly low to me.
I never see the nas cpu above 30% and memory useage is low and I have HW transcoding checked.
The nas is a synology ds918+. The network is gigabit bonded between router and nas. Rest of the network is wired gigabit with some wireless but it seems to happen on both the wired and wireless viewers.
Can someone point me to some information on troubleshooting this?
