Live TV constant buffering *FIXED* - remove Plex and install Emby

Yup same issues here. It is truly unbelievable I paid for this crap. I think the HD homerun I/F is super nice thinking about going that route for Live TV $35/year. Anyone try it?

But why do some people have issues and some don’t?
On my Galaxy S21 with Android 12, remote viewing of Live TV works fine.
From my Plex DVR running on a core i3, 10th gen, with Plex installed on a 1TB NVMe Drive(Samsung 970 Evo Plus).

bump.

Mine not only seems to buffer and pause, but it also seems to lag behind frequently and almost give a slow motion effect. If I jump forward a few seconds, it will correct itself until it happens again. But the buffering is hard to handle. I have no issues playing through the HDHR app or Jellyfin, just Plex.

bump.

Hey @elan What are your devs doing over there? Doesn’t seem like they’re fixing any long standing problems…

Unfortunately they seem to be focusing more on Plex online streaming channels these days, to make money from adverts.

For example you still can’t order channels on the DVR so in the UK all the most popular HD channels end up at the bottom of the guide, so you have to scroll through every time. This has been requested for many years, and from what I understand got implemented for the online channel guide but nothing for the much older DVR.

I have zero interest in advert funded media, the interruptions totally spoils the experience. The whole reason I use Plex is to skip adverts from recordings.

Sorry for not providing any updates recently. I did have a few users who ran our special build with extra logging. The devs are still reviewing the information. I don’t have any further info.

I have the exact same problem on Nvidia Shield with HDHomeRun and Plex Live TV. Runs fine on hd app but buffers like crazy on Plex. It sounds like problem boils down to inefficient code running on the Plex server.

I bought the lifetime Plex pass for the dvr feature, kind of wish I didn’t now since it seems that no one is working on this issue for the last 2 years.

Tested Plex on another SSD, I thought that was the reason of buffering, turns out buffering still happen.
Also thought Xteve was involved in this issue but streams are flawless on VLC / Kodi and Jellyfin

@anon18523487 tell me if there is anything I can do to help fixing this issue? Shall I post the log files?

A quick fix might be to just increase the memory buffers?

I found a fix for the buffering. See this topic:

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.

From your logs it sounds like your issue is actually due to your server not being powerful enough to keep up with transcoding. You have a Shield running Android 11. There is a bug currently for that device running Android 11 where it will not do hardware transcoding. The cpu is barely able to keep up.

Glad you found a workaround, but it’s not the same issue being reported in this thread.

I downgraded to Android 9. Now when I watch live TV and choose a video quality lower than the original the load icon just spins forever (on 11 it was studdering/buffering), so I don’t think your assumption was right @MovieFan.Plex.
If I watch with original video quality it still works (just as with Android 11).

I attach log files.

@pthorn Your logs indicate that the transcoder is working. Slowly, but working. If you are getting a spinner, then it’s something on the client end. Can you reproduce and get me the log from there?

@selektaandy Sorry, still no update.

@anon18523487 Sorry for delay. Here are the logs. I tried from different clients all spinning when transcoding.

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster… at least on this thread

Im going to try turning off the closed caption optio and see if that helps, hadnt thought of that…

From all the things ive tried, ive not tried that.

My main issue is buffering on live tv using firestick 4k, and the plex xbox (series x) app. All other devices (phone/tablet/ipad/older firestick) work fine.

It seems that only a handful of channels refuse to direct play, bbc, itv, channel 4 channels, the others will play without a transcode, what makes the difference? And what is ā€œbetterā€ with the older firestick over the firestick 4k that means flawless playback on an older device, but constant buffering on the newfangled updated super-uber-fairydust powered 4k stick? It boggles my mind.

All the best, i look forward to see how this thread plays out

This thread is going on 3 months old with zero progress, and the problem has been around a lot longer than that. I’ve offered to provide more logs. I’ve offered to test new builds… These offers have apparently fallen on deaf ears. @elan Seriously, wtf is going on at Plex? Do you guys even JIRA bro?

It almost seems like the strategy in play at Plex HQ is to drag this out long enough for the user to get fed up and leave. I’m getting pretty close here… I’ve been a user for many years and been an advocate for the software, but I just can’t justify feeding my friends and family obviously bunk information that Plex is awesome. It was… once… It’s become a dumpster fire, and apparently there’s nothing but clowns running the show since nothing gets fixed in a timely manner.

For as many people as i’ve seen with this problem, you guys can’t expect me to believe that you can’t reproduce the issue… FIX. THE. PROBLEM.
