Using Nvidia Shield TV - running Android 9 (8.2.3)
Plex server is running on Dell OptiPlex (only thing running on the PC)
In short, I did UPDATEs for the Media Server and Plex App ( 9/17/2021) to the Versions above. After the Updates OTA (Live TV) would play fine for around 30 minutes (sometimes would fail in 20, sometimes 35, minutes) then the Plex app would go into buffering mode and after a few minutes crash.
Before the Updates Plex had been running smoothly since March when I experienced a similar issue (then the buffering started after 90 minutes)
Since last time the problem was the App, I down graded the Nvidia Shield App to 8.22.0.27327, and it has been working well for the past day. The Media Server remains on Version 1.24.2.4973.
Would like to know when it is safe to apply updates to the Nvidia Shield App.
Thank you
UPDATE - had seen an update for both the Media Server and App. Installed both (Server) 1.24.3.5033 and (App) 8.23.1.28053. Same problem, after playing an OTA channel for around 25 minutes the App starts buffering. Didn’t wait for the App to crash, reinstalled 8.22.0.27327 and once again have a working system. Note that the logs I uploaded should show what happened when the App 8.23.1.28053 was installed. Plex Media Server Logs_2021-09-21_13-24-35.zip (4.8 MB)
UPDATE: - installed the 8.23.1.28053 Plex App and did another test. Around time 1254 tuned in to a channel, the App went to constant Buffering around time stamp102-103, Ended session around 109 after watching 6+ minutes of buffering. The log is attached.
I have a similar problem although when tuning a different channel the message about not being able to tune the channel is present. Restarting the device, allows it to work, but the after an indeterminate amount of time the same issue occurs. How do you roll back version without having to reset everything from scratch?
Having the same issue as OP, but using OpenMediaVault with PMS running in a Portainer container, and HDHomeRun CONNECT DUO (Model: HDHR5-2US). I have reverted my client (Fire TV 4K) back to 8.22.0, and testing now… so far, been tuned for 1 hr 28 min with no crashes.
I think it could be down to PMS rather than Plex. It seems to be crashing PMS and then restarting PMS without touching the client will get it playing again.
The only way I know to an earlier version. Download the apk you want to use and put it on a drive connected to Nvidia, In Nvidia settings go to Apps, select Plex, select uninstall updates. Then using a File Explorer locate the apk on the drive and install it. You will need to connect the App to your account/Media Server going through the sign in process. Hope that helps.
But I think it’s Plex Media server that needs reverting back to an older version and that contains all the recording information, watched programmes and libraries and doing that method will wipe the lot. Plex itself doesn’t seem to be the issues, it’s more PMS
I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the Plex App or an issue with the PMS not playing well with the newer apps, but at least using an older Plex App does offer a short term solution. I am hopeful whatever the issue it’s quickly addressed in a newer release. The one issue I have discovered using the older app, “Live TV on Plex” does not work consistently, but everything else seems to be working. And since it’s more important to me to have “OTA Live TV” (Live TV & DVR) I will continue using the 8.22.0.27327 Plex App. Glad to hear the older Plex App works for you as well. If I find a newer PMS and Plex App work I will post it here.
I’m having the same issues too… Synology NASv7 Version 1.24.3.5033 + Nvidia Shield + OTA HDhomerun4k
Monitoring the live log via console. Here are the red flag errors that re-occur when it crashes abruptly
[Transcode] Streaming Resource: Attempting to create AdHoc transcode session b961f7050a780ed9-com-plexapp-android
[Transcode] MDE: No part decision to choose from
[Transcode] Streaming Resource: Cannot make a decision because either the file is unplayable or the client provided bad data
Occurs on Any Tuned Channel
This repeats until the Client App restarts. Or you hit the back button.
Just going on a whim guess, Seems to be a server bug in the transcoder
So hopefully plex sees this and can fix this quickly as now the Live TV DVR Engine has lost some reliability. [HIGH PRIORITY]
Correction: When errors occur, App is Hung to buffer. Pressing BACK button APP Crashes to Android Homescreen.
Thank you, over the next day or so I will update the App (which is when I experience the issue) and watch the Server Log to see if maybe I am able to capture the same type of error.
Much agreed there… very irritating. @elan or any plex ninja… clients and servers on latest version. Fully Rebooted the NAS to clear the dust bunnies, problem persists
Same issue here…
Seems to crash a few minutes after the next program in the guide… Example, if I’m watching a 30 minute program that ends at 1PM… about 5 minutes after, I get the spinning buffer icon and it just hangs… pressing back will close the client app on the Nvidia Shield.
Server version Version 1.24.3.5033
Latest Beta Version on the Shield…
Using an HDHomerun Connect Quattro and Prime.
I’ll try to downgrade the Shield to test.
I watched on a Roku and it didn’t have the same problem, so I assume it is the client app.
today I was able to briefly test Plex App 8.24.0.28206 and LiveTV (OTA) has been playing without any issues for 1 hour 15 minutes. The longest Plex App 8.23.0.27973 ran without going into a buffering mode was 35 minutes, typically it would fail after 15 to 20 minutes.
I did not do extensive testing of the 8.24.0.28206 Plex App, but I did play a DVR show, and a show on Plex LiveTV. So for now I am going to continue running this version of the Plex App on my Nvidia Shield.
