Live TV keeps stopping

This issue must be affecting almost everyone using at least a chromium-based browser and you would think that plex must at least see it for themselves and would have sent out an update by now. I’ve been using Kodi now to watch live TV without any issues but I haven’t found a way to record using it otherwise I would ditch Plex entirely. I tried to get JellyFin to run on my NAS but for some reason I can’t map the drives.

Broken for me too. PMS v1.24.5.5173

FWIW If you have Synology NAS running DSM 7 you can uninstall Plex and install the beta version already on the DSM and streaming TV seems to work without stopping. At least it’s usable.

All - as the OP, I feel this thread has run its course. I was having issues, but it isn’t present any longer. I can’t tell you why, other than give some scenarios as to possibilities based on my Plex server setup.

I run Plex under UnRAID in a docker container. My container maintainer running Plex (binhex) makes regular release updates that hit my server, and I have my Plex container set to auto-update nightly.

As I said above, my container / setup didn’t change between the streams dropping and no longer dropping. Things have been stable ever since my last post. I still don’t know why, but if it happens again I will check the plexdb logs and see if I can find some kind of root cause.

My main guess? This is some type of network communication issue. Yes yes, it works when running HDHomeRun directly - but maybe some kind of weird packet loss or something else interfering with network traffic on the home network between the HDHomeRun and Plex is causing the drop-outs.

I would highly suggest that if you have additional issues that you open a new thread and post your logs like I did above. It’s the only way the developers will ever see your issue. Continuing on with this thread will, in all honesty, just bury your issue, because my issue as the OP is solved. The moderators and developers will see your logs and can assist from there.

Good luck everyone.

Same here. I have been reporting the issue on another thread. I’m stuck at Version 1.24.4.5081 which doesn’t have the problem occurring ever few minutes. All later versions up to 1.25.0.5246 exhibit the problem. As others have noted, this seems to be (only?) with Web Player on Chrome/Chromium and Firefox. However, I haven’t been able to reproduce on Edge strangely enough (but Edge doesn’t have any Live TV audio, so that isn’t a good solution either).

Is there another thread for this issue that I can access/add onto? I’m still experiencing the same thing in Chrome & Edge (on Windows 10 machines) browsers with PMS running on Windows 10 machine. Rare, if ever, see this issue via Roku app or mobile app. I’ve tried to track logs in Console and see some interesting warning messages (re: duration not found) but hit or miss on logs showing actual errors when the playback fails. As with most others in this list, I only started seeing this in the last several PMS builds dating back ~4-6 months or so.

Using HDHomeRunQuatro for digital tuner from OTA.

My thread on the topic is https://forums.plex.tv/t/playback-error-this-live-tv-session-has-ended/758776

The problem—if it’s the same—is still outstanding, i.e. NO fix released. The Plex Team Member contact has been sa2000. I was told the error takes this form in the server log, e.g.

WARN - Could not convert "duration" ("4294967295000") to the correct type

@oidarnam - Thanks for the reply and the update from Plex support. I have seen that same Warning show up in the logs/Console when I have tried to diagnose the issue. Interestingly, the playback only ever fails after several instances of this warning in the logs (usually anywhere from 10-15+ warning log line items). The stream will play for anywhere between 3-10 mins before the playback error occurs.

@sa2000 - Let me know if you/the Plex support team need any log files from me to help triage the issue.

The next step would be to capture all the responses the Plex web (hosted app) is getting from the server from start of playback (tuning The channel ) up to time getting one of these warnings in the server log - so would be browser dev console network logging with preserve log option ticked and saving all the captured requests and responses into a .har file and zipped sent privately as PM together with the debug server logs

The development team have been trying to reproduce the problem but May be it happens on siecific channels

OP here.

I’m just updating. My live streaming has been solid since my last reply. Maybe @oidarnam has the same issue I had, maybe not. My logs when I was experiencing the issue are above for comparison.

All - the symptoms as mine may seem the same as yours, but the diagnosis and remediation may be different. I highly recommend opening your own support thread with logs attached. For all I know, I had issues on my server setup, home network or indeed, maybe the latest version of Plex (via Plex Pass) fixed it.

Unfortunately I still don’t know what my personal resolution was. The joys of auto updates I suppose. Or gremlins in my network / server that got kicked out.

My current setup (remember, my issue was only on the web browser client):
Server: 1.25.2.5319
Web Client: 4.72.0
HDHomerun model/firmware: HDHR4-2US/20210624

I believe that I found the solution to my particular “Playback Error: This live TV session has ended” problem when using Plex Web.

Months ago, and for other reasons, I had enabled the experimental option "Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” in Settings - Plex Web - Debug. I had left it enabled. Beginning with PMS 1.24.5.5173, which incidentally fixed a live tv playback error with Android, the server began dropping the Plex Web live tv stream after several minutes. The Dashboard didn’t even show that the session was playing when the channel was first tuned.

I turned off that option and now it seems to be working fine. Thought I drop this here in case it helps others. Please reference the forum link above for more information or comment. No need to comment here as it’s now off-topic.

Thanks @oidarnam for isolating the problem area

I have reproduced the problem and referred it to the Plex Web development team

Can confirm I also had this "Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” in Settings - Plex Web - Debug enabled.

With it disabled, the app.plex (v. 4.72.0) runs fine (tested a few hours). However I still got the 3 minutes stopping when on local web client (when accessing plex from 192.168.x.y:32400) which is on v. 4.66.1, even with the alternate protocol disabled.

There was a very similar bug which was fixed in Plex Web 4.71.0 - currently only available in the hosted Plex Web app https://app.plex.tv/desktop

(The release notes do not appear to reference the fix)

Whilst the fix of the root cause for this is still being worked on - and will be in a future version of Plex Web, the 1.25.5 Plex Media Server beta that came out today does have a change that should circumvent the problem
