TeleText is a fun old technology common in Europe that nobody cares about anymore, but in Sweden we still have TeleText streams on many channels delivering news, weather, EPG, subtitles, etc.
Since a few versions back (1.9.2ish?), whenever I start a live TV session, (DualHD DVB-T/T2) I get the video almost completely covered over with the full TeleText data feed looping round and round.
I believe it interprets the teletext data stream as subtitles and transcodes them in on top of the video.
I don’t see this problem with recorded TV .ts.
Works perfect here after turning it off - i had almost given up.
I might also have turned of something in the client (android tv) - there was an option about burning in subtitles… Will re-check.
I have this problem using Plex 1.9.5.4339 and HDHomerun (model HDHR3-4DC, firmware: 20170930).
Tried rebooting both but it did not help. I get this (flashing teletext) problem using Plex Android app.
update:
I just used the webinterface to change the preferences of my account from " subtitles auto " to " subtitles manually ". And suddenly the Android app works fine. No more flashing.
Also, it turns out i actually also have 2 problems with watching LIVE tv via webinterface. In case these turn out to be related:
2) But when using the web interface, it just says “Playback Error / Unable to tune channel (Not on air)”.
3) And in the web interface it seems the programs it thinks are on now, are actually a 1 or 2 hours in the future.

Just turn off subtitles on the server and it works fine.
Settings → Server → Languages:
Deselct “Automatically select audio / subtitles” and set “Subtitle mode” to “Manually selected”.
It means you will have to turn on subtitles manually when watching movies, but I can live with that.
Many thanks for your workaround!!! Unfortunately this option in Germany does not help with the stations Sky Sport HD.
Ok…it will work … I had forgotten to select manually.
Need teletext subtitles on TV because of hearing aid problems
Me too. But that will not solve my problem: I have a hearing problem, and need the subtitles on all channels, also when my own language, to be able to understand. I know the subtitles are in the teletext and I would like to know how to record them too. Hope that Plex would try to help people with hearing problems.
Question: can the teletext page with the subtitles be activated automatically by changing some XML/INI/CONF file in freeBSD/Linux ???
