Live TV Not Working Without Internet

Server Version#:
Player Version#: Roku Streaming Stick

Guide/Lineup name:
Using XMLTV?:
Channel number/Name: Any

My internet connection is currently not working due to a hardware failure and I’m waiting on new hardware to arrive. It has been a week already and I may not get my internet up and running for another week or so. The main purpose of having PLEX Media Server and a TV Tuner is so I don’t need to use the internet to watch live tv. Since my internet is not working, I figured the guide would be smart enough to detect that and just show the channel numbers but it doesn’t. The guide just has a spinner and finally errors out due to the missing program guide so I can’t watch live TV in PLEX. My Movies and previously recorded TV work fine so I guess that’s all I get for now.

You don’t need internet to use the tuner. However, you do need internet to get the guide data. We store about a week of data on your server so if you haven’t used your server in a week, then the guide data may have run out. Without a guide, the tuner in Plex does not work.

Edit - If you can get data temporarily through a hot spot or similar so that the guide can update, you can watch again.

I figured that much. However, where I live, my only option is Satellite Internet. So, basically, I am stuck without live TV unless I can drag my server to the closest town. There really should be some type of fallback to just show the actual channels when the guide is unavailable. Another good reason to have a fallback to the channels without guide info is when you setup the tuner. I had Viasat 30MB Business Internet and after adding the Tuner to Plex, I couldn’t watch live TV until the guide finished downloading. That itself took about 20 minutes. Being a developer myself, it just seems silly not to have a way to fallback to a guideless option where you can just pick the TV channel by number and play it.

You can go guideless kind of. What you need to do is use a custom XMLTV file instead of the Plex EPG and basically use it as dummy entries.

I agree that Plex should have a dummy entry built into their EPG for channels that don’t carry any guide data at bare minimum which unfortunately can happen more than one would think. Just to get the guide on-screen.
