Live TV only works for primary account

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195
Tuner Make/Model: HD Home Run Quatro

I am not sure why this is happening but only the primary account (mine) has the ability to play live tv. I think the issue is EAC 3 5.1 audio, because there are like two very low-quality tv channels that will play under the other users but other than that I get nothing. For my account everything plays fine, all of the clients are android based. I am not sure what else to check/do other than starting over to possibly fix the issue.

Just to verify this, Live TV only works on the Plex Home accounts and you need to go into those accounts and turn the live TV on under restrictions per home account.

Plex should be able to transcode those audio codecs, and if that’s the issue, try setting the stream to covert automatically and see if that helps.

I have a user set as a home user, even tried as an additional home admin. I can turn on live tv and dvr for him and then save it. if I refresh the browser, it’s set back to NO live TV and DVR access.

I am having the same issue. Set it all up with hdhomerun flex. Admin account works just fine but all other user accounts cannot watch live tv. I have tried to delete and recreate accounts. Gave permission to all libraries. Checked that they have full access to the live tv and DVR. Restrictions set to none on everything.

Bump… Would love for this to be fixed or even someone to suggest some things to try.
thanks!

Bump. this is still an issue. Please fix it.

Just chiming in to say I am also having this issue.HDhomerun as well and the issue happens on both android and Roku. Under the primary account live TV works perfectly fine and is transcoded properly, any other account and it just plain does not work correctly because it’s not being transcoded. I’ve had to resort to just using the HDHomerun app instead. It’s incredibly annoying because under the primary account it is working as intended.

still an issue.

Workaround that works for me: When you are on the infinite black screen with it not working, turn on captions. Once it starts playing I can then turn them back off. Sadly this only works on my Nvidia Shield with dedicated on screen caption button. I don’t have such a button on my phone and the 3 dots doesn’t show the captions option.

need server and player logs from when playback does not work to look into it/make report

Log from a clean install of the Android app. Not sure how long you want me sitting on the infinite black screen before taking it. Hopefully a few seconds is good enough.

Nearly a full year since this was first reported an issue (July 2023). Any idea when this will be fixed? Thanks.

This has been a frustrating bug. The android version stopped working only a few months ago.

And cricket noises from the plex staff

I purchased an HDHomeRun Flex primarily to be able to share local channels with my cord cutting friends who can’t put up a TV antenna. They already have access to my movie & TV libraries, but they can not see my local TV feed at all. My server from the HDHomeRun is not showing up in the Live TV, only the Plex channels. I can see it just fine, although for some reason I lost about 40 channels with it over using just the built-in tuner in my TVs.

I’m also having this problem but now with the latest upadte 1.40.4.8679 live tv fopr ALL accounts have stopped working for my HDHomerun

14 months later, still broken

Found another work around. Force captions to “always enabled” and everything works.

@morganj This looks to be related to Live TV black screen on Android TV App for non-primary home account

Just getting around to ACTUALLY READING YOUR WORKAROUNDS :face_exhaling:

So, after all these months, that was the simple fix, sure it’s annoying to have to turn off subtitles on everything on the live tv

All client side settings on the android versions of Plex, seem to do basically nothing, including forcing subtitles in the Chromecast/android Plex settings. Only this on the servers language settings.

Unfortunately there’s not enough parity of client side settings. The Chromecast/android version of Plex doesn’t allow you to “never” burn subtitles like the Samsung version of Plex. If there was a difference between live tv subtitles, vs local media or Plex free Media, then you’d be able to even just set the forced subtitle burn in for the live tv alone. Currently, forcing “always enabled” subtitles under language settings, affects all users and media globally within your “Plex home” but their clients can’t properly disable subtitle burn in client side, since different apps have different options.

Plex on Chromecast/android has “Automatically, Only Advanced Formats, and Always” where as Samsung, you get “always, automatic, never”.

So I can override it on my PC for web and windows, and Samsung, but not Chromecast/android. So you have to manually turn off subtitles on everything else you watch because there’s no “never” burn subs option.

Also interesting to note, before using the server side settings for sub burning, I could get the streams to play on the Chromecast/android by changing the quality from convert automatically to another transcoded bitrate, but the subs would be enabled even tho the sub menu was selected as “none” and you would have to then change the subs to the “unknown” and back to none to remove them, but stability suffered from that even after the server side subtitles settings was forced
