Server Version#: 4.125.1
Player Version#: 10.10.1.5986
Tuner Make/Model: HD Homerun Dual
Guide/Lineup name: ALL
Using XMLTV?: no
Channel number/Name: ALL
When a non-primary user attempts to watch a channel it will spin then go to a black screen. The live session gets created on the server. It appears that the server then gives a 404 when the client attempts to retrieve the session
This requires:
A non-primary plex home account
Android TV client
if either of those changes it works correctly
This has persisted across a reinstall of the plex app, a server upgrade and a client upgrade

Im having the same issue! I think it was the latest March 11 2024 update to 10.11.0.183
I couldnt understand why it wouldnt work for other people, until I switched users, and tried it on both android, and plex web.
I hope this can get patched soon
-edit ps for context
I have been running xTeVe with an iptv provider, and m3u4u, and sharing my 5 tuner allotment out to the people in my plex home, and all other devices work, but android is broken for non admin users.
Aside from some random errors and check your antenna errors, it works well enough for the price, and almost worth the effort to interate it all into Plex. So I preface it to any who I let use it, that it is unreliable, but can work great. DVR on the other hand, thats just not worth using it seems.
Thank you for reporting this, we are looking into it. Could you give more information like where your users are starting playback from? Currently, we have not been able to reproduce the issue.
Playback is started by choosing “Live TV” from the left list, then selecting a channel from the guide interface which comes up, at which point it goes to the black screen with the loading spinner, followed eventually by just a black screen.
Server is latest official plex docker image on the same subnet as the client
The client device is a CCwGTV (4k) which I believe doesn’t do native mpg2 so as mentioned in the original post a transcode session gets created, hopefully this helps you with reproduction.
The specific issue is Live tv will not work for ANY account that has live tv enabled for them in a plex home, that is NOT the Admin of the plex home , the wheel will spin, and stop on the black screen, and plex doesnt report any streaming activity.
I Have several different app verisions for various devices, and the android is the only one with this issue. CCwGTV and android phones, if you switch user profiles to the admin, the live tv will work.
Just wanted to report the same issue for me. It works fine for web, and ios devices. Android devices get a spinning circle followed by eventual black screen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app and no change.
Some more info I’ve notice… Once the non-primary android user tries to play TV, the HDHomeRun shows the tuner in use. On the Plex admin account, it shows a live TV session is being recorded, but there definitely is not enough network traffic for that to be the case. This is a HD channel and it’s just kbps.
same here. Works on iOS, web but not Shield Tube or Shield Pro.
This is for managed home user with Live TV enabled (in fact, everything enabled) on Andoid TV.
I wouldn’t hold my breath. There’s another thread with people complaining of the same problem dating back nearly a year ago. Don’t know why they waste so much time adding features in all these updates instead of prioritizing fixing basic functionality.
Unfortunately, I do not have any updates on a fix. Would you be able to try something, reproduce the issue then try adjusting the quality and select “Convert automatically” and see if playback starts?
TLDR: press a channel, when you get the infinite black screen, turn on captions and it starts working, can then turn off captions and it continues to work.
You are on to something. If I change it to convert automatically its starts working.
Update: Another interesting thing I just noticed… Turn on captions, and magically it will start playing on original quality. You can turn them back off and it will continue to play. I think it maybe related to another bug I’ve noticed. No matter what setting I do, I can’t get captions off by default. I’m forever turning off the captions before each show/movie. What’s odd is when I did “convert automatically” first, it was showing captions even when the setting said it was set to off. I had to turn them on then back off to get rid of them.
Update 2: this only works on my Shield because it has dedicated on screen buttons for quality and captions. On my phone there is no way I can see to toggle captions or quality. Pressing the 3 dots only shows the name of the show.
I was working and had got to check the replies. Yeah, same thing here, on the phone there’s no way to change quality or add captions until it’s already playing.
I may have figured out what is going on here… I don’t think this is actually an issue with the Android app. I see a similar issue on Windows which makes me wonder if it’s server side.
Found weird behavior on the Windows app which helped me connect the dots. On the Windows app, go to a non-primary account, select a channel from the guide, notice the captions are showing by default. When pressing settings, it lists that subtitles are set to “none” even though they are clearly showing. I need to turn caption on (which changes nothing) and then back to none to get rid of them. The non-primary account clearly has something wrong here too.
Now we try the same thing on the Windows app but with the primary account user. Go to the guide, select a channel, and no captions are showing. If you click settings it correctly shows none as it should. Everything works properly on the primary account.
Now we return to my previous post. Primary account on Android works as it should. Non-primary account you get a black screen after selecting a channel from the guide. As soon as you select the captions to on, boom starts working with captions showing. Set them back off and it still works but without captions.
I believe both issues are one in the same. The black screen on the Android non-primary account has to be related to captions incorrectly trying to play with them set to none like on the Windows non-primary account.
That may be, but it’s also been mentioned in other threads. Also, not every android app is the same the Nvidia shield apparently has CC controls, while the android phone and CCwGTV android apps don’t have the subtitle option until after it starts playing.
Point I was trying to make is I don’t think this is a bug unique to the Android app. If that’s what the developers were initially investigating, that may explain why they are having such trouble squashing it.
Let’s look at what we know…
1)Yes, only the Shield version can bypassed the black screen with the caption button. It’s still the same black screen as the phone version of the app before bypassing it though. My takeaway from this is the black screen issue must be related to the captions on all the Android devices. I think that’s a reasonable assumption.
2)The captions on the Windows app is also behaving incorrectly but only for the non-primary user. Just like the Android app, everything works perfectly for the primary user.
Now, what are the odds of the caption button (when available) fixing the non-primary user black screen issue on Android and there also being a caption issue on the Windows app only for the non-primary user? To me this looks like the same issue on both apps. Just because the Windows version doesn’t crap the bed and go black screen when handed a captioned/trancoded video it didn’t ask for doesn’t mean the problem isn’t that both apps are getting something they aren’t expecting.
Now that you mentioned it, the non primary user for windows isnt working, I checked mine, it WAS working before the last update from what I remeber, so, my apologies for sounding confrontational.
I get “could not tune channel” and “(no parts)” errors now from xteve streams, and “plex channels” streams seems to work fine
Same issue here. On the main account, everything works perfectly, but just black screen with spinning wheel of death when trying to use the secondary accounts. Here is what I get for logs:
