I cannot watch Live TV (ota channels) on any managed user account. Everything works fine on the main user account, but no other users can watch live tv.
Under settings => Plex Home click on the managed account and then click on the restrictions tab. Did you set the “Live TV & DVR Access” setting appropriately?
By default, only the admin account will have access to Live TV (and DVR) until you grant the access to other users.
The user can view the guide and everything but cannot watch any of the channels. On the exact same device and app, if I switch users to the admin account, I can stream all the channels.
No errors at all. The yellow spinner animation plays for a little bit, then the screen goes black and acts as if it is playing something, but there is no sound, no image. It is the same on every channel.
This is only on the android tv app. If I use a browser and login with a managed account, it can play live tv just fine, but not on the android TV box, unless i’m on the admin account.
I would be happy to provide the logs, but ill have to find a guide to dump them tomorrow.
Are you running the Plex Server software as an app in Truenas or docker in Unraid? So far I have found that to be what everyone has in common with this issue.
Interesting observation.
I don’t really use Live TV but recently set it up for reasons.
Anyway, I am running Plex via Docker on CentOS 7 and I have 2 managed users so I just gave them access to Live TV. I tried to watch Live TV from the one managed account I gave access too and the loading icon just spun (I didn’t wait long enough to view the exact same outcome as OP but I am guessing it would be the same).
So it looks like there is an issue with Live TV for managed users when Plex is running in Docker, which seems kind of strange as I verified for non-managed users that have access to Live TV it worked for them, so just managed users look to be impacted.
Completely agree it’s not a fix. Reason I asked is this issue has been going on waaaaaay over a year and Plex staff either can’t figure it out or don’t want to bother dealing with fixing it depending on who you ask. I believe I have it narrowed down to it being a caption issue in the docker version of Plex Server. If you want a work around: go into settings, Languages, change subtitle mode to “always enabled”.
Just to be clear on what you are referring to for your potential work around, you are saying on the managed account go to Settings => Account => Settings => Audio & Subtitle Settings => Auto-select subtitle mode => Always enabled?
Or are you referring to another location?
Asking for clarification because the managed account I tested this on I already had that set and I am still not able to get Live TV working (this in on Android TV, which the OP did mention is where this happens and I forgot to put that in my reply).
I checked in the Android app settings but did not see anything related to language there as I believe that is all at the account level.
Also, I just confirmed that Live TV did work on Plex Web and the Plex app for Windows, so it seems like maybe it is more of an Android app issue with something not be coded correctly vs a Docker issue, otherwise one would think the issue would appear on different platforms.
With Windows and Linux client apps, it plays live TV, but it incorrectly shows captions even though the client reports they are off. The only way to kill captions on the clients is to enable them (which changes nothing), then you can turn them to off. This only happens on non-primary accounts. Using the main account everything works as expected.
I’ve installed a clean copy of server on Windows, Linux, and docker. No issues to report on anything but docker/trunas app. It’s broken straight off a clean install with no changes made except adding the HDHomerun.
I first discovered this because turning caption on in the Android TV interface got it playing.
Big problem was, there is no dedicated caption button on the touch screen Android interface. This is what fixed everything for me: On the computer, logging in on the web interface with the admin account, clicking these 4 steps gets Android playing for me but with captions.
Can you reproduce the issue once more and provide the Shield logs and PMS logs? I’ve filed this issue internally. Having the PMS and client logs together would be very helpful.
