at least a couple times a week i cant watch live TV without restarting the plex server running on my synology box. if i look at activity when its happening, all of a sudden there are a ton of Recording: Live TV - Sessions, but i know this are orphans. is there a way that these can timeout or something… this has been happening more an more in the last few releases for sure.

here is a screenshot of what it looks like when this happens.

also here is my setup with the HDHomeruns.. when i looked just before the restart, 3 of the 6 tuners were occupied..

Out of curiosity, how is Convert Video While Recording configured in your Live TV & DVR → Device Settings area?

Years ago I configured mine to transcode and I saw the behavior you do; it was resolved after setting it to off.

Just something to look at. There could be other causes as well.

just checked, mine are both already off too…

Don’t change the channel to another channel while in the middle of a channel change.

Either 1) wait for the channel to load before changing channels again OR
2) let the channel error out before changing again.

This crap only happens to me in those scenarios and it’s been like that for years.

Had to drive it into my familys head over and over and over and over and over and over to NOT do this EVER for any circumstance because it crashes the server.

thats such a pain… wonder if there is an API call and we can just write a batch job to stop recordings like in the dashboard

@sa2000 Can we get this issue looked into. Been happening for years.

Yep happens to me occasionally too.

Without any way to remotely restart the server it’s a pretty bad issue. If the tuners get locked up mid holiday then no watching or recording until I get back to restart.

Would be nice to be able to cancel the ‘recording sessions’.

Thanks for flagging this

Do we have any recent debug server logs for this ?

Might need to increase the number of log files - would be good to catch the logs from before the time when the issue arises up to time of the problem

See this web page for the setting to manually adjust the LogNumFiles setting

Advanced, Hidden Server Settings | Plex Support

What would need to happen to reproduce the issue is to change the channel really fast and make sure the channel change happens during another channel change.

For example select a channel to play and then before the picture shows up go back to the guide and select another channel. If it don’t trigger the problem right away keep doing it.

mine is stuck again now… here are the logs right now sa2000

ok here are some more verbose logs after a restart and was able to replicate

and after a restart, @sa2000 , working normally now… so here are new logs

@jrandallnyc Thanks but you are making it very difficult by disabling and re-enabling debug logging - i will need to go through all the logs to try and find a set of logs that gives me debug logging from before the server is launched and to the time when the issue arises

Of all the logs provided - only 4 minutes period 21:19 to 21:23 on 21st Sep has complete debug logging covering period from launch up to time of logs being collected

I do not believe the issue arose during this period

I will see if we have any logs with debug logging where we started with all tuners free and then the issue arose

What time was the screenshot taken ? And what time was the issue replicated?

Ah - I see the filename of the screenshot shows it was captured at 21:22:31 - I have the logs for this time

OK - I can see the multiple tune requests. Starting a DVR live TV session on a channel and cancelling it when switching to another is not an instantaneous action and I can understand why it may arise that we end up with apparently several sessions in progress - is the problem that the issue does not resolve itself, given it time to complete all the asynchronous actions relating to starting and cancelling DVR Live TV tuning ?

I will reproduce the issue and see what happens if left after many channel switches

correct, the problem does not ever correct itself until i restart the server. at least not in any amount of time that i have been able to tell. users just tell me they cant get live TV working and i see this situation.

Do we have logs of an actual failure to record or failure to stream because of the tuners are not being freed up when they should be free ?

I tried flicking channels on Plex for iOS and did not get multiple sessions or failures to tune - I was switching channels whilst it was still showing “Loading”
