Live TV stream defaults to subtitles on

It seems that with one of the past couple of updates, I now get subtitles on when watching LiveTV on my Roku. I have subtitles turned off on my Roku settings, yet when I am watching a LiveTV stream (most recently happened on the NBC Nightly News), the subtitles seem to be automatically on. I then have to turn them off via the options in the stream. If I fast-forward to catcup during a delayed livetv recording, the subtitles come back on (!?!?!) and I have to turn them off again. This wasn’t a problem until around version 4602.

Has anyone else seen this behavior as well? I have found no setting to disable or set subtitles to be off by default, but I could have overlooked it somewhere.

Server Version#: Version 1.23.3.4707
Player Version#: 6.7 build 28

Captions for Live TV should not be enabled if you have the captions mode off. This is a global setting, so if you enabled captions during another playback in any channel, then Live TV playback will show them until turned off. They should not be turned on again after seeking, which definitely sounds like a bug. We will file and investigate. Thanks for the report.

Let me know if there’s any way I can help troubleshoot this. I’ve seen it multiple times, and will try to make note of exactly when it shows up. I often start a stream a few minutes late, and play from the beginning, essentially time shifting, and I sometimes am just watching a live TV channel. I’ll do some playing around a bit later and see if I can get it to recreate from the recorded show as well, or if it’s simply from the live/timeshifted ones.

Appreciate looking into it, as it seems some new behavior I’d not seen before.

Thanks!

I have this issue also on Roku. For me its random, sometimes they are off when I start live tv and other times I have to turn them off. Then they may or may not turn back on when I switch to another channel.

I managed to get this to happen again tonight, @ljunkie . Plex was recording the “When Nature Calls” live from our ABC station. I started playing it after it’d been recording for 40 minutes. The subtitles started showing on the playback. I’ve got subtitles turned off in my general settings, but I had to go into the video stream settings and disable the Closed Caption stream.

After watching the first segment, commercials started, so I naturally fast forwarded thru them. And guess what? After starting playback again, the Closed Captions were back on. Had to go to the stream options and again disable closed captions. I was also able to disable from the Subtitles option in the Roku client on the bottom left of the playback.

This behavior is brand new, in the past couple of versions, as this annoying feature would have shown up before this. I’m not sure what caused it or why it’s on but please see if it can be remedied, please. I’m using 3 x HDHomeRun Dual as my tuners.

I was also able to determine that if I watched the same show that had been recorded and put into my library, the closed captions did not automatically start, and it apparently abided by my settings for subtitles. So, maybe this is somehow not looking at defaults/preferences for live viewing or time shifted viewings?

We’ve published an update to the preview channel that should fix the issue. Please give that version a try and let us know. Thanks again for the reports and sorry for the troubles!

Hi @ljunkie

I tried the 6.8.4. It does seem to address the issue where subtitles would always turn back on when fast forwarding. I was watching a CBS show this morning, which had started recording, and I selected the “Watch from start” option, as it’d not completely finished recording yet.

The closed caption subtitles started (still no clue why THAT is happening, as I don’t ever want closed captioning on unless I select it). I turned them off on the stream, and then when the first commercial break came, I fast forwarded thru it and the closed captions did not come back on.

So, I can confirm that this build seems to fix the issue of the closed captions coming on after any seek. I’m still pretty unclear why the closed captions are even coming on, though, as I have subtitles turned off in my settings, which it seems to totally ignore.

If some investigation could be done as to why closed captions are coming on in the first place, it’d be much appreciated. This behavior is “relatively” recently. As I’d previously outlined, it seems to only happen when watching a show “live” as if I wait for the recording to complete and then play it from my library, the closed captions do not come on.

Thanks for the fix, and glad I can confirm the targeted fix worked.

@ljunkie Is there any reason that when I watch live streams from my HDHomerun that it would default to having Closed Captioning on? I’ve turned off subtitles in the Roku and, to my knowledge, in the Plex app on Roku too, yet any time I tune into a Live TV stream, it starts with Closed Captioning on, which I then have to turn off.

It’s at least honored to not re-enable it when I fast forward or rewind now, but I’m still perplexed why Plex is so insistent on showing me Closed Captioning.

Thanks!

Been seeing this too from time to time. Not all the time, but every few days when I first start watching something after a day or so it will be turned on for some reason. All global settings have always been set to off, and I never turn on CC for any reason manually. This is mainly on my Roku Streambar.

I’m using the firestick with the hdhomerun TV tuner, where has the option to toggle the subtitles on and off gone? It was there before the last update, but trying to watch the football last night and went to turn off the subtitles, no option at all.
It is a useful feature to have, please can anyone shed any light on this?

Don’t worry folks, yesterday’s update has returned the playback settings menu! Thank you

Problem solved…

@ljunkie Subtitles will randomly turn on using Live TV & DVR. Frequently after an update but randomly sometimes too. PLEX PREVIEW.
