Watching in progress Live TV has several issues

The main reason I have plex pass is for the Live TV & DVR and it is has several issues.

Server Version#: 1.32.1.7510 (been broken for at least two years)
Player Version#: Roku (last two years worth of releases)
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun FLEX 4K
Guide/Lineup name: Local broadcast listing
Using XMLTV?:
Channel number/Name: Doesn’t matter

First Issue
Can’t watch in progress DVR recording. The issue here is I record something and wait to start watching some minutes into the recording. Usually plex will let me watch what is recording but sometimes it doesn’t start at the beginning when I use “watch from start”. I will get placed at some point a bit into the recording. When this happens scrubbing forward and backward becomes broken too and it will cause the recording to keep resetting/starting at the same location.
A bit of a workaround to avoid getting into the broken state, I have figured out that I can use “watch from start” if less then 30minutes has passed, something around the 30min mark breaks the watch from start. I also found that after 30mins I can use “watch live” and go back up to 30mins. If more then 30mins passed or I scrub back more then 30mins then all bets are off and watching live is broken, I need to wait until the end of the broadcast and I can watch the recording. To be safe I usually try to keep things in the 20-25 mins range.

Second Issue
Sometimes tuning the channel doesn’t work. Server is nvidia shield, player is roku. Right now I have a recording in progress and I can’t watch it. Roku says “recording failing. please check your antenna.”. After restarting the roku and it giving me the same error I gave up with the roku. I went my android phone and I was able to watch the currently in progress recording just fine. Looking at the server I see a bunch of errors at the moment not sure if they are usually there and whenver I try to click to play the in progress recording on the roku the “alerts” page of the server dashboard says “Recording Live TV - Session”.

I have a similar issue that might be related to the bug going on with watching Android TV live TV while a recording is happening…

Me too, following. For Google’s benefit, the error message from Plex is “There was an error while attempting to tune the selected channel. please check your connection and try again.” This is on a Shield TV Pro. Also happens on another newer Google TV device, so this is not a platform-specific bug. I think it has been around for years; though it seems intermittent for me.

I’ve been having the same issue in the last few days! Only happens on my Android players (Android mobile and Android TV). Unable to play anything while recording live TV, but it works totally fine through the browser on my desktop. What’s changed, is anyone looking into this?

I have the same problem and have been trying to figure it out but cannot. I have used this function (watch while recording) every morning for about two years. It has worked every day perfectly. Withing the last few weeks all Android devices fail. I can confirm that all my Fire TV devices (Amazon) work just fine. My android devices I tested are Google TV (5 months), Android TV, Samsung Phone Galaxy S22 Ultra. The issue happens on both my local network, and outside my network. This is very annoying and hopefully someone can figure something out sooner than later. Lastly my server runs on Windows 10 with plenty of power.

Please put some emphasis on this bug, it is very important.

I’m starting to think the live seeking component of this originally posted issue is a server issue (no proof yet however). It is happening across multiple clients. I have compiled an ongoing list of reports of same and/or similar issues, perhaps if folks are having the same problems they can report server versions and client version and help the dev team resolve the actual problem.

Here is what I personally experience this issue on:

  • Server version: 1.40.0.7775 on Windows
  • Roku client version: 7.14.5.8943-041961b59-PlexPreview and 7.13.9.8924-fee2a403a-Plex on models 3820RW and 4200X
  • Android client version: 10.6.0.5141(3aa3109) on ChromecastHD TV and 10.5.0.4996(5d68759) on firestick 4k
  • Tuner: HDHomerun Quatro Model: HDHR5-4US Firmware: 20231214
