Live TV Update for Android TV

I had the Plex Server with Live TV up and working on my Nvidia Shield, but wound up having to do a factory reset it to cure the “running out of space” nag screen.

The reset fixed the problem, and everything is back up and working, and all apps re-installed, with one exception. No Live TV is available. The server version running on the Shield is 1.4.3.3433. According to the Plex instructions, I need a newer version for live tv. What can i do to get the update re-pushed to my Shield?

go to the Google play store on the device and update it like any Android app.

The only option offered in the play store was to uninstall the previous update. Should i do that, and then re-install?

should not need to, but don’t think it could hurt

Check if there are any system updates for shield itself also. I don’t think the update requires it but might as well

Go to the Play store on a web browser and force the update to your Shield TV.

I tried removing the Plex update and then re-updating. When i check the set up by logging in to the Plex website, I am shown to be running server version 1.4.3.3433, and DVR Live TV is enabled, but i cannot tune live TV when I access Plex through the Nvidia Shield. It is simply not available. it was available and working before i did a factory reset of the Shield. Puzzling.

Server must be on version 1.7.3.3937, not 1.4.3.3433, for Live TV. Ensure you have the Plex Pass update turned on for downloads. FYI, you are not even current for the General/Public release of Plex which is 1.5.74016.

I checked through the Plex website login to make sure my Plex Pass was current. It is. For updates on the downloads, the Plex Pass option rather than public is selected. But I don’t see a way to manually force an update of the Plex software on Android TV. It is easy to do for the server software on my Intel NUC: you just click an update button. There is no way to do that on Android. In the Google Play store app, there is only a button to remove updates, and no option is available to update. My Nvidia Shield software show the latest version 5.2. I do remember that after I reset the Shield, there was still a ghost setting on the Plex set up for the old one (it was grayed out and unavailable), so I deleted it, as the new Shield server was active. Is it possible the Plex database shows the old Shield information on the download status, so I am not being properly updated? The only setting available for me to correct on the Plex Android app would be to clear the cache. Might that help? I am at a loss.

Use a web browser on your computer and visit the play store website, you can force the update to your Shield.

OK. I am not home, but from work, I was able to access the play store and push the current update to the server. Under devices from the Plex login site, the Server software is now listed as 1.7.2.3878-8088811b8, and the Plex Android app software is listed as 6.1.1.656. Does this appear to be correct? Over the web, when i call up the Nvidia I only have an option to record programs which show up as being broadcast live: I cannot play them live.

I do point out that before I got the Nvidia Shield, I was using the beta software which allowed recording on the server application installed on my Intel NUC. Do I still have a beta version of the server software on the Nvidia rather than the current version? Would that possibly be a problem as well?

As stated in the descriptions of Live TV it currently only works on Android TV and iOS players. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/205778607-DVR-Live-TV

Understood. So when I fire up the nvidia shield tonight, using the Plex updated software versions I listed above, i should expect to be able to see live tv again, correct? Is the problem that I am trying to test it over the web for the live tv function?

Hopefully you will see the Live TV on your Shield. If you have a iPhone you could always test it out before you get home.

I’m an Android guy to the core.
I will have to wait until this evening to test.

yes you will see a Live TV row on Android TV player when your server is selected . In the program guide there will be a “Watch Now” category and when selecting something that is currently airing there will be a “Watch” option

All good now. Live TV is working fine on the Shield. Thanks for the help.
