Live TV will no longer play - PLEX support please help us

Live TV used to work fine then all of a sudden it stopped. I was / am using a HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO. I have just added locast2plex as well and have the same error with both. I am attaching the server logs but here are the live log errors:

Recorder: Unable to create transcode session or session failed to start.

Recorder: Error 16 (Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna.) starting the record, shutting things down.

Again this used to work great then all of a sudden just stopped. I am transcoding to RAM but also tried switching to SSD and HDs and still the same issue. I have seen many threads on here with people having this issue and no answer from PLEX support at all. Please help us plex. Full logs are attached.

Running on unRAID with linuxserver.io docker w/ hardware transcoding enabled. Everything besides local TV works fine.

Server Version#: 1.20.0.3181
Player Version#: Used them all… Latest versions on Shield TV, Roku, Android, Web and same issues.

Here are logs w/ debug on:

Looks like people that had this issue in past versions have downgraded and the issue was resolved. Is this an issue with the new server code? Did the Plex team mess something up somewhere?

These logs show your Plex Media Server process is crashing frequently, there are a lot of database issues showing in your logs (slow queries, database schema changed, etc) and filesystem errors: “(ERROR - Failed to calculate available disk space for path '”/mnt/user/TV/General/.grab"’: 2 (No such file or directory)". Unless you have set an alternate transcoder temporary directory, then this is where Live TV writes.

I’d suggest starting by checking on the .grab folder error - is a mount failing? Also check to see if you have a corrupt database. If the database isn’t corrupt, then you may benefit from optimizing.

.

Just completely started over from scratch and setup a new plex server and I am still getting the playback error for both locast2plex and HDHomeRun. Not sure what the issue is now. Any ideas?

Would you please post debug level logs from your new instance from shortly after a failed attempt to play Live TV? Hopefully the fresh setup eliminated the crashes and database messages and it will be easier to see the Live TV issue.

Here they are:

The good news is that your Plex server instance is looking better. The issues are different between your HDHR and Locast2Plex.

For your HDHR, your Plex server isn’t able to reach your HDHR, and is marking it as dead.

With the HDHR identified as dead, subsequent attempts to use it fail. For some reason Plex in Docker can’t reach your HDHR from a network perspective. “No route to host” is a fairly generic Linux error meaning the target IP:port can’t be reached. Can you verify that this is the correct IP address for your HDHR, and that it is alive and reachable? Do the HDHR logs show anything? Make sure your HDHR firmware is updated, and it may be worth trying a power cycle of the device.

I wish Locast was available where I live - I would like to try it. It isn’t officially supported by Plex as far as I know, so it is harder to troubleshoot. I did find an issue logged on GitHub that could be the same as your problem, though with only Plex logs I can’t be sure. The issue from the Plex perspective is that the Live TV session starts, but then it gets a timeout.

Thanks… I tried resetting the HDHomeRun and checked through the HDHomeRun app itself and it is not working now for some reason… the antenna looks to be on and it used to work fine. I may have to try replacing both the antenna and HDHomeRun.

For locast it seems other people have it working with unraid so i am not sure what is going on with mine. I posted in the forum as well to see:

For your HDHR you can also try putting the IP of your HDHR in a web browser’s address line. If your HDHR and networking are working then that should display the web interface for the HDHR. If it does display then you can look at the HDHR’s status by click on “System Status”, which should display the IP address, firmware version, if the firmware is up to date, etc. If you then click on the “System Log” link it will take you to the HDHR’s logs.

Thanks and sorry… forgot to mention I am getting no video data on it now:

Maybe it is something wrong with the antenna… I will try replacing it but I have to crawl into the attic and above a “fake roof” if you will. It was not fun lol.

It is strange tho everyone else on the other unraid thread seems to have locast2plex working. not sure why mine is not.

Are you able to directly connect your antennae feed to a TV to see if it works? If it works connected directly to your TV then at least we know that the antennae is at least somewhat ok. It it does work on your TV then also see if the TV has a signal strength indicator. Different tuners have different sensitivities, and if your signal is marginal it could still be a problem with it not being strong enough for the Quattro, which has an internal 4 way splitter to be able to serve the four tuners. Do you have a splitter in the antennae feed before the HDHR? Each splitter reduces the signal strength somewhat.

I also found a couple instances of this error in tickets on the SiliconDust boards. In one case the device was still under warranty and SiliconDust asked that the device be returned for replacement. In another they determined that the problem was LTE (cellphone) interference and the problem was resolved by adding a LTE filter to the antennae feed.

I’ll have to defer the locast question to others. Locast isn’t available to me and I don’t have any ability to see how it works or troubleshoot.

■■■■… i am going to have to see if i have something laying around that i can connect directly. there is no splitter. the wire is straight from the attic to the mech room where the hdhomerun is. this did work fine when i initially set it up. there are leaves on the trees now which i guess could affect it. my neighbors is still working fine but he is another 15 feet or so up higher on the street.

people have used a vpn with the locast2plex docker to spoof location and got it to work if you really wanted locast.

With my upgrade to PlexMediaServer plexmediaserver_1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9_amd64.deb I am seeing this “Live TV Playback” error only in the Firefox 80.0 x64 and New MS Edge (Chromium code based) Web GUI. My Roku Ultra units with the newer Plex UI appear to work for Plex Guide Live Playback. I am using Locast2Plex Python script for my “tuner” and posted a detailed description on https://github.com/tgorgdotcom/locast2plex/issues/52. This problem just showed up with my upgrade from plexmediaserver_1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896_amd64.deb to plexmediaserver_1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9_amd64.deb.

[edit]
Summary for Plex Version 1.20.1.3252 Live TV using locast2plex tuner under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS x64:

  • Recording Live programs still seems to work .
  • Watching Live with Roku Plex Guide works
  • Watching Live of the same program with the Plex Web GUI works for Chromium Version 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit)
  • Watching Live of the same program with the Plex Web GUI fails for both Firefox 80.0 x64 (Ubuntu and Win10 Pro) and New MS Edge (Chromium based browser) under Windows 10 Pro
  • Watching recorded media (from local disk) appears to be broken in the Web GUI, matching the list above. i.e. LiveTV through locast2plex appears to still work under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS x64

Mine has never worked… not sure what is going on since others have it working. I am on the newest version but on unraid so i am using the locast docker.
