So my music library has “Album Art” set to “Both Plex Music and Local Files”, as well as “Prefer local metadata” checked, but my library seems to be ignoring most if not all “folder.jpg” files present on new downloads, and instead reverting back to the artists picture as the missing album art fallback. This behavior also seems relatively new, as most of my library that was downloaded, I dunno, a few weeks ago and prior is looking good for the most part.
As an added tidbit to this post, I’d really love if we could disable “AllMusic” as a Plex Music metadata agent. It appears that it’s prioritizing AllMusic first which is frequently way behind MusicBrainz, so in my scenario, even when MusicBrainz is updated with album art, it still won’t grab it.
Not sure if this is the problem, but just to eliminate a possibility:
If you want the folder.jpg to be used as the album cover, make sure it is in the same file location as the first track (on the first disc, in multi-disc albums).
If your music files are in a path like music\Artist\Album\xx-trackname.mp3, if folder.jpg is in the Artist folder, Plex will (normally) use it as the Artist poster. It it’s in the Album folder, Plex will use it as the album cover. The same is true for “cover.jpg.” To avoid confusing myself, I prefer to use ‘folder.jpg’ for Artist images and ‘cover.jpg’ for album covers.
I think I’m good on the file naming and locations… the software I’m using uses “folder.jpg” as both, but they’re always in their respective locations (artist folder.jpg is exclusively in artist folder, album folder.jpg is always exclusively in album folder).
As for permissions, I figured since the ownership was the same, it wouldn’t matter, but they do appear to actually have different permissions. Do they look problematic? I’m not too knowledgeable about perms. First image is one where I’m experiencing the issue, second is an older one that worked properly.
I’m using Lidarr-Extended (a program that essentially uses Lidarr for media indexing/categorizing, and Deemix for downloading), and I’ve been messing with permissions for all my media for a little bit now. (TLDR, had conflicting 0/0 99/100 PIDs on some containers and it was wreaking havoc) and I may have adjusted Lidarr’s perms but I honestly don’t remember.
I just ran a test, and those permissions on your folder.jpg file don’t appear to cause the problem.
I have no experience with UnRaid. I looked at a couple of log files, but I’m not real adept at that either, and nothing obvious jumped out at me, so I don’t know if I can be of much more help.
I have the same problem. I don’t know exactly when this started, maybe 1-2 months ago. The solution is to unmatch the affected album. But I have the Album Art option set to “Local files only”. So Plex should take my local .jpg cover art regardless of whether the matched album has a cover attached to it, right?
