Long time plex user here, I’m trying to improve my files with some better release date metadata. i have home movies with dates down to the day. I’ve tried getting plex to import metadata from the mp4 files for the “originally available” / “release date” attribute in plex, but the only field I’ve had any success with is the “Media created” attribute in windows, which i can’t update programmatically with any tag editors I’ve used before. some of my files have the “year” attribute in windows populated with 8-digit dates i.e. 20240929 windows hates this, and plex doesn’t read it, but i can get the file to store the date info that way. I just need it to be usable so I want a program that can copy that string into a date metadata field that plex will recognize such as the “media created” attribute.
However I’ve reached a plex based nuisance that makes my search moot. I can get the library in plex to show the date for a file once. then if i refresh metadata for that video or the whole library, the dates disappear. I want to know if I’m doing anything wrong, if there’s a better way to do what I want, or if this is somehow intended functionality and why.
plex media server windows
other video type library
plex video files scanner
plex personal media agent
mp4 file: (metadata tags: title, description, long description, year, comments, artist, *Media created)
scanned library: plex release date populates
refresh metadata: plex release date clears
scan again: release date does not populate again.
