Local network client asks for Plex Pass

I knew that the move to require a PlexPass for remote streaming was coming up, but today my local smart TV on the same network as my Linux server won’t play anything without a PlexPass as if it was a remote client.

The reason for that is because there is a longstanding certificate/security bug on the Vidaa TV plex app which prevents it from loading thumbnails unless the server is configured for remote access. That’s a bug that’s been around for at least two years and that has never been fixed.

The data never leaves my network (works even if my network has no internet access), it’s simply down to a bug in an official Plex application.

That means that I either have to pay for a PlexPass just to stream locally (the opposite of what PlexPass is supposed to be for) or have an absolutely miserable media experience and migrate to another solution.

I understand that PlexPass for remote streaming is what you guys want to do, but I was told that my local network wouldn’t be effected. But it is.

Can anyone help me work this out?

Thanks

See Client says it won't play from "remote server", although the server is local

That’s most likely what is known as “DNS rebinding protection”. It happens in your local DNS resolver, i.e. usually your router. Item #2 in the above list.

I’m getting this now as of a few hours ago. Only the Hisense/Vidaa tv is affected, all my other devices can stream locally fine and there’s no difference in network settings on the TV to anything else on the network.

Did you check for rebinding? What is the LAN IP of the server vs that of the Client?
