local plex server cannot be found

Hi all,

Short question that I cannot find the solution to.. I have posted all my details below.

Question:

I have just reconnected my apple tv 3 back to the network and power after not having used it for a week or so. All of a sudden. Trailers can no longer find my local plex media server on my synology. As far as I know nothing has changed in my configuration. Error message I get is "No plex library section available". If I go to the page settings it states 0 plex media servers… strange thing is … if I log in with myplex on this settings page (honestly did not even know I could. never remember doing that)…. it immediately finds 2 remote servers (my own server which is on the same network…. and the cloud server that i have some stuff on).

What did I do

- reinstalled the version of plexconnect that I still had .. this is version "plexconnect_noarch_0.3-4". this did not help

- logged in with myplex which kinda solves the situation but it calls both servers remote and i should have a local one as well right or am I completely missing the point here :-)

  • Apple TV 3 software 5.3 (6105)

  • The DNS server set on the ATV 192.168.178.34

  • The local IP address of the device that PlexConnect is installed on: 192.168.178.34

  • The device and operating system (including version number) that PlexConnect is installed on: Synology NAS DS 1812+   DSM 4.3-3827

  • The device and operating system (including version number) that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on: Synology NAS DS 1812+   DSM 4.3-3827

  • The Plex media server (PMS) version number you are running (do not put 'latest'): 0.9.9.10.459-008ea34   (plex for synology)

  • The local IP address of the device that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on:192.168.178.34

  • The PlexConnect version number. in synology it says 0.3-4.. I used package plexconnect_noarch_0.3-4,    on apple tv it says in the settings screen version 0.3.1+ (in bottom left corner)

  • The contents of your 'Settings.cfg' I don't know where to find this on my synology need help here how to get to the folder

I am really not an experienced user so need help how to get to the plexconnect folder on volume 1 of my NAS to get to the log file

Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me out...

Do you have require authentication on local network turned on on the pms?

Are both the server and the ATV on the same subnet?

PlexConnect and PMS are installed in the same Syno box, right ? If yes, then look into your Settings.cfg file.

  • If it has enable_plexgdm = True then your home router must have the zeroconf service enabled (sometimes called multicast), and PMS should have GDM enabled as well
  • If it has enable_plexgdm = False then you need ip_pms = 192.168.178.34

Update: In order to view / edit the Settings.cfg file in your Syno you need a way to login into via a Mac or Windows PC. This is what you should do:

  1. Install package mc from SynoCommunity (not required, but it will make your life easier)
  2. If on Windows install Putty (I think that on Mac you have a SSH command to login to the Syno)
  3. Enable SSH service in the Syno (so that it can accept remote logins)
  4. Login to the Syno (using Putty or SSH) userid root and password the same that you are using for admin
  5. Give mc command and proceed from there. The Settings.cfg file is in /usr/local/plexconnect/share/PlexConnect folder

If, and only if this works I suggest that you upgrade PlexConnect (see the bottom part of post#1 in the bwynants instructions) to the latest version. There are so many new things in PlexConnect since the 0.3-4 installer... You will love them.

I do not have this turned on and the server and ATV are both connected (wired) to the same network.

  • If it has enable_plexgdm = False then you need ip_pms = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the fixed IP of your Syno

Yes they are both installed on the same box. … how do I get to the settings.cfg file.. I am ashamed to say have no clue how to find this.. in file station i only see my own shared folders no app folder with plexconnect.

will try to turn on GDM anyway and see what happens..

it still is strange that the whole setup worked a week ago … anyway.. let's see and thank you for your help!!

Followed all the instructions and found that it has

enable_plexgdm = True

found multicast and GDM enabled as well.. still zero local servers unless i login to myplex?

I guess best thing is to update everything?

DSM to latest version 5.x

Plex mediaserver to latest plexpass version

and reinstall plexconnect??

After setting enable_plexgdm = False and ip_pms, asaweli reports that PlexConnect is now working. He is now upgrading the SW in the Syno before trying to use GDM again.
