Local traffic showing as remote on Shield

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#:

I’ve been having issues with the Shield (2017) lately. I started using a new VPN a few weeks ago but followed this guide to setup proper playback. I have had no issues for about 6 weeks, then on 3/14 I noticed everything started transcoding. I thought it was a VPN issue so I tried tweaking the settings, but had no luck. Then, I turned off the VPN and noticed the Shield was picking up all local traffic as remote. I could tell because it was playing my content at exactly what I have the remote settings currently set at on the Shield. Tautulli shows my IP as 127.0.0.1 with the VPN on. With the VPN off, Plex is picking up my local traffic with the external (ISP) IP. Not sure what’s going on here.

You may have DNS Rebinding Protection in the router blocking local traffic using the secure connections plex.direct url

You can test for that by doing an nslookup within your local network and see if it works

nslookup 192-168-1-146.907b1c3796954bc994904140a380cd3d.plex.direct

If there is no DNS Rebinding protection block, this would translate to 192.168.1.146

If secure connections using this url are not working, then client apps would switch to using the WAN IP address - hence it may become remote

Logs from the server and client app would also confirm if it is this
