Local Trailers displaying in Extras instead of as Trailer

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737
Player Version#: Web 4.22.3

Last year I migrated from XBMC to Plex. I was using all local data with XMBC and enabled local metadata in Plex when building the library, and it worked fine. My local files use the XBMC naming convention:

Movie Name (YYYY)/

  • Movie Name (YYYY).ext
  • Movie Name (YYYY)-trailer.ext
  • Movie Name (YYYY).nfo

and these all scanned into Plex fine and the trailers displayed as the “reel” icon in the header of the Web Version and the left-hand nav of the classic and new Vizio apps. As seen here:

Yesterday I migrated my plex installation to a new server. The previous server was Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and the new server is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I migrated the data following the wiki instructions and everything appears to be working fine. However, when I added a new movie, with the same naming conventions, the trailer is now displayed under “Extras” and is not added to the nav as seen below:

Both Ubuntu servers were running the same version of Plex Media Server and Plex web, and they were both installed the same way, via the plex apt repository. Further, the Libraries are on an NFS mount and the “Media” folder is symlinked to a folder on the NFS mount. Meaning that the media and library data sources and permissions have not changed.

So my question is how do I get the trailer “reel” icon to appear for these new movies instead of as “Extras” ?

Did you clone the server or create a new one?

Try changing the order of the metadata agents under both

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.

Then Refresh Metadata on the movie and see if it has a different outcome.

I’m not sure I understand your distinction but I built a new server and used apt to install plexmediaserver. I stopped the service and then copied /var/lib/plexmediaserver from the old server to the new server - replacing the contents of the fresh install (per the wiki) and restarted the service.

I did as you suggested, but it did not work. The order for agents now looks like:

  • Personal Media
    • Personal Media
    • Local Media Assets (Movies)
  • Plex Movie
  • The Movie Database
    • The Movie Database
    • Fanart.tv
    • Plex Movie
    • Local Media Assets (Movie)

Did you find a solution to this? I’m running:

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902

All my movies in my film library are saved in their own folder under format “Title (Year)” and each has another subfolder “trailers” with an mp4 trailer file (usually with a random name).

Like OP, all have been found by plex. Only two films have the “reel” icon displayed in the header of the Web player. The other films have the trailer saved under “Extras”.

I’m running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and running PMS via the linuxserver docker image.

I would like to know, like OP, how to get the trailer “reel” icon to appear for these movies instead of as “extras”.

What has worked for me is moving LOCAL MEDIA ASSETS to top of list.

Edit: That breaks all the metadata :frowning: When I move LOCAL MEDIA ASSETS down the list to #2 (below Plex Movie), then the metadata is restored BUT the trailers move back down to the Extras tab.

I did not find a solution to this, but interestingly it is resolved on the beta unified interface on the player for the one device I have that it’s available on.
