I have added local trailers to my existing movie library and I have named them with the title of the movie followed by a “-trailer” at the end. The movies also include the quality of the movie but. So like this:
“movieTitle (year) quality” and the trailers only have "movieTitle (year)-trailer.
My problem is that plex does not seem to see this trailers until I do a manual “refresh metadata”. Then it works and from my understanding a scheduled task should do this every third day but I have waited and it does not work. I posted two images showing my settings and I figured I might as well give you a log file. I have several log files, not sure which one to attach but I chose the latest one called “plex media server.log”
I have the same problem when i add trailer to the media folder with correct naming:
Movie (2021).mkv
Movie (2021)-trailer.mp4
Plex doesn’t recognize that i added new file to the media folder, only if i hit “refresh metadata” trailer is than added in library. I don’t have any issues with .srt files, when i add .srt file to the media folder plex recognize that change and new subtitle is than present in plex library.
All relevant settings are turned on. If i remember correctly i didn’t had this problem before.
I’m on raspberry pi, latest public server version.
The extras are handled by the local media assets which is part of metadata refresh as you have noted. The file scanner doesn’t add these to the entry (though I imagine it needs to be run to detect them). Instead as these are local media assets, they are handled by the metadata scanner which is a little confusing and counter-intuitive.
I have definitely had this “problem” for a while, anything older that I go back and add things to I have to manually do a refresh on. I believe overall that anything after a certain age does not have automatic refreshes because the metadata is not expected to change over time.
If you have it set to scan regularly there might be some age of item cutoff that exempts it from the scan so it is not behaving as you would expect, I am not sure on that one.
I added some trailers to the movies that i imported to plex few hours before, so i don’t think “when” movie is added to plex have anything to do with it.
I know that before trailers were imported automatically. I reinstalled debian and plex server and now i must refresh metadata for trailers to be visible. I’m now on the new plex movie agent, maybe before i was on old one, so maybe there is an issue
Note: My library does not rescan on changes detected, as often this will try to scan my half-copied files I find. My movies library also is using the new Plex agent with imdb id’s in the folder and main film filenames for everything…
I was playing around with a movie I was updating tonight and I added some extras and without a library rescan refreshed the metadata on just that movie. Extras picked up immediately as expected but the movie didn’t change. Required me to rescan library or analyze to pick up the main movie file changes.
It appears then that the metadata refresh does a local rescan of the movie folder for extras files without doing a rescan of the library items themselves.
I created new library with legacy movie agent, and trailers show up in plex after i put them in movie folder, i don’t need to refresh metadata, they just popup in plex web view after second or two. But on legacy movie agent there is another issue, if i remove that trailer from movie folder, plex can’t detect that, even if i refresh metadata or scan library files, trailer icon in plex web view will stay…
So for trailers not showing up automatically in plex i guess it has something to do with new plex movie agent.
After i saw changelog from latest plex media server update i thought they fixed the problem
(Scanner) The Plex Movie scanner may not pick up extras and subtitles for media with unicode characters in the filename.
but no, problem is still there
Again, local trailers are not imported to plex automatically with the new plex movie agent, i must refresh metadata for trailer to be visible in the plex. This is not the case with legacy movie agent, when i switch agent for my library trailers are added automatically after i add them to the movie directory. With new movie agent when i add trailer to movie directory, in plex movie page i can only see briefly spinning circle on movie poster and that’t it…
All my trailers are named correctly, i tried to add them also in subfolder Trailer, but same story.
