Lock feature does not work - Can we get this fixed, seriously!

Hello,

So of my 1850+ movies, I have about 65 movies that are unidentified and I have to edit them. I specifically edit the Title, Sort Title and Originally Available. After editing them, I lock them and a few hours later, they return back to their original settings. This needs to be fixed, period. As a paying customer, there should be no reason why when I lock the text box, it ever changes again. This really needs to be fixed.

Agreed - I have some movies in my libraries that are “Director’s Cuts” or alternate versions, and I cannot successfully “lock” some of the fields. They always seem to get reset. It’s more irritating that anything else, but still…

This should probably be moved to the server side of the forums as it’s not a Plex for Roku issue. What OS is your server running?

cmggarf, I couldn’t agree more! I’ve had the same issue for ages with my almost 2,700 movies. How many times do we have to edit/lock/save an entry only to then have it randomly UNLOCK and totally reset/reverse our previous manually-entered data? WilhelmStroker makes a valid point. Moderator… if necessary, please move this thread to the most appropriate location and then… PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ADDRESS THE REPORTED ISSUE ! From my experience, it appears that this may be caused by the inability to leave the ‘Rating’ field empty. Why can’t we leave it empty? If it is indeed left empty, the edit will not save successfully. If ‘0’ is entered and then saved, that may be a possible the catalyst for the problem.

If you name your files so they can be matched you never have to worry about editing and locking fields… once matched they stay matched.

This completely ignores the notion of custom entries in the fields.

e.g.: I want to name “Star Wars: Episode IV” as “Star Wars - Theatrical Edition”.

Once again:

Here’s an example from my library:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977) [Harmy2.5 720p].mp4
…Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977) [Theatrical 1080p].mp4
…Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977) [Director’s Cut ].mp4

Note: Information in [brackets] is ignored by Plex.

All files matched (2 years ago - fields are still locked and have never changed). They did merge, but I split them and made a slight edit to the description to denote the difference in them. Harmy’s has about 9 commentary tracks too so that took a bit of a novella to denote… lol

The Director’s Cut - Limited Edition was loaded into a folder with many extras thusly:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977) [Director’s Cut ]/
…Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope (1977) [Director’s Cut ].mp4
…a giant gob of extras-featurette/-short/-trailer/-deleted/etc.
…etc, etc, etc

Note: I recently found the title in the folder with the extras has to be done first then add the other titles, then split. It was a miracle, but it happened that way by accident in my library long ago.

The Key is getting a match.
‘Star Wars - Theatrical Edition’ will not match, but if by some miracle you do get a match it’s the wrong name so it’s subject to vaporization at any moment…

You’re literally only addressing one data field; what if I want to enter a custom summary, rating, or studio information? If the “lock” function does not actually work, then the lock icon should be removed. If the Plex devs actually do intend proper functionality, then it should be consistent - failing that, it should at the very least be explained.

It is explained - right here:

Name your files properly so Plex can match them.

Once you get the file to match you can edit any field you want and it will stay locked because Plex has matched it properly. It won’t try to match it again.

Your problem is your files won’t match so when Plex tries and fails to match it again it smokes your edits.

Star Wars movies are unique in that you can get just about anything to match. For instance:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars (1977)
That’s just one listing at The Movie Database. Apparently a lot of other names will match as well because my names match and they always did, but typically if I have any questions about a Movie name I check The Movie Database or IMDB and use the name they use. I’ve never been disappointed either way.

The bottom line is that:
Star Wars - Theatrical Edition
isn’t one of those many file names that will match. For one thing there is no (YEAR) in the name and that’s a must… without that you’ve got a bad name.

BTW… Use FileBot - stop the guess work.
FileBot pre-matches your file with the appropriate online database then names it correctly.
Problem solved.

“your files won’t match so when Plex tries and fails to match it again it smokes your edits”

If this is the case, then it’s a bug. Plex should never clobber a field when it has been locked by the user. THAT’s the problem.

The newest PMS update 1.4.3 will now enforce the lock, except for the poster. There are technical issues that make this not possible right now, but all text should stay locked.
