Hi guys, got an ongoing problem here that’s seriously making me think of ending my subscription. Now and then I’m ‘losing’ my media. that is shows and films that have been added disappear and it seems it reverts to a state before they were added. Another strange thing is if I look at the whole library in plex previously it would show a-z down the right-hand side. Now I get only a few letters of the alphabet, as if there are no files in the other letter categories, which there are. frustrating really ..
I’m not an expert on Plex, but I would say a few things to look at.
1.) Are the files missing on your PMS?
2.) How are your files named? Did you follow the Plex recommended naming schema? Before I did this, I would have movies mislabeled, and some would be nested. By this I mean, i.e. Total Recall, it would be listed once, but I have both the 1990 and 2012 version. If some movies are being mislabeled possible it’s nesting them then.
3.) When you update a library does it scrape on library change?
4.) Do you have some of the media on different drives? So are there multiple drives with movies and one possibly being USB that is dropping out?
5.) Do you have this same issue on other devices? PC, another Firestick, mobile phone?
Those are some of the things I can think of to try to track down if it’s PMS or the player.

hi thanks for the responce, no files are missing on PMS, one of the first things I checked tbh …
I’ve followed the recommended setting as far as I know, up to recently I haven’t had a problem.
I did post a couple of months ago because a version vas crashing…
Not sure what you mean by ‘scrape’ to be honest, it seems to be checking them when I do it manually.
All media is on a 2 Tb hard drive .
thanks

I’ve only seen Plex “losing files” in situations where it was configured to scan files automatically/periodically and to empty its trash after every scan – in situations when your media files could temporarily be missing / not connected to the server. That hiccup is usually even more specific as Plex usually won’t delete items if it cannot find an entire library folder… so this most frequently applies if you’re having external or network storage that’s taking its fair time to spin-up / wake up (therefore Plex identifying some files and deeming the others “missing”).
If you have such a wonky data connection, I strongly recommend to disable Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan. This way, Plex will at least maintain the library records and allows a more detailed troubleshooting (in addition to not losing any manual edits of your media, collection/playlist assignments…).
As for the alphabet index – the Plex layout will adjust based on the available space… if you can give it a full screen height, you should usually see all the characters. If there’s not enough space, Plex will squeeze the index and drop individual characters. This is not linked to content being missing.
Tom80H pretty much summed up what I was meaning. By scrape I meant scanning the library for content changes. I guess last thing I could think of might be trying what I’ve seen on here called “the Plex dance”.
Another post talks about doing a database rebuild. You can find that here.
Good luck!
