Lost movie on Plex server (Fine in my storage)

Hi All,

So I see that I have 130 files in my directory and I only see 129 in Plex on my shield. i have no duplicates, so I am unsure as to why.

I tried to remove from my Qnap NAS the movie that was missing from the listing and check in Plex, it would just go down a movie and drop another movie.

Any idea what this could be or how to fix it?

Can you explain that a little bit more detailed?

Any idea what this could be or how to fix it?

How was the file named (exactly?)
Was it a mp4 file?

Sure!

So I have 130 movies (all mkv, mix of Blu Ray and DVD) on my Qnap in one folder titled Movies. All movies should be named correctly “name (year)” sorta thing.

Server : nVidia Shield
Storage : qnap
Client : Web, Roku Android Phone/iPad

When I look at the folder I see there are 85 movies. When I look using Plex (any client type) I see 84 movies. In this case I tracked down the movie and moved it. Plex see’s 84 movies as does my folder. If I put any (I tried multiple) movie back into the folder and do the update, Plex still only shows 84 movies.

Now if I keep dropping all my movies (I have 130) the folder shows 130, but Plex shows 129!

It almost like no matter what movies I have on the server, once I hit 85, I loose one being seen by Plex. I was thinking it may be a bad named file or something, but I do not see any correlation!

Can you do a screenshot where the number of movies is shown?

Sure! This is the current files I have on it. been trying to move stuff in and out to see if it helped (It did not)

Put that explorer view in a list (not details) so we can see the entire contents - show all files, hide none. You may have an ‘Item’ in that folder you’re not seeing right now, or a subtitle file, for instance, would be an ‘Item’.

Okay, here is the list view for you guys.

Edit: Someone posted this. I am not sure what to do. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/223458/cant-add-more-than-487-movies-to-my-library/p1

Well, that looks pretty good to me.

I guess at this point you should be aware that Shield is world famous for items falling into a black hole:

If you’re just missing one item I guess that’s better than it could be.

Join the party over there. Perhaps some hapless user has a tip or something.

I think you hit a glitch in Shield TV operating system due to the number of entries you have in one directory.

Your file names are fine but you should try and put the movie in a directory with the same name which also makes for better organization as well especially down the road when you start doing other things like nfo, poster, extras, trailers, subtitles, etc. You want to try and keep all information about a movie in the same directory.

Over my dead body.

I’ll put a movie in a folder if I add extras to it - otherwise Hell will form an ice cap 500 miles thick before I put all my movies in a folder.

That, IMO is sheer madness. It’s just NOT going to happen here in Juicetown.

Well if you want to get around the android problem then you will.

I’ll have to assume you don’t use external subtitles, nfo, posters or the like on a regular basis?

For me it would be shear madness NOT to do this. Not only that but I use different “directories” off the main movie branch as well. So all movies starting with “A” going into /movies/A, Movies starting with M go into /movies/M, etc. It makes directory lookups, maintenance and everything so much faster including Plex.

You can have Plex watch for updates or new files. It will see the directory time stamp updated and scan all the files in that directory.

Look at my SIG and tell me you would want about 40,000 files sitting in one directory? For me this is the way to not fight the ICE CAP.

If you have ever worked with hard drive recovery tools you would know generally speaking the chance of recover is much better when there are multiple sub directories vs none holding the files.

Plex will work with massive number of files in a single directory but you are giving up performance doing so.

That’s my two cents. You can disagree and that’s fine! Plex will adjust and work with many different strategies if the files are named correctly.

Yep, use subs all the time. Add local artwork all the time. No problems. The only movies I have in folders are those with extras.

Plex pretty much took care of Giant Magnum Libraries for me with their Dueling Banjos From Hell Over and Under Horizontal Lists for all their ‘wonderful’ Plex apps. If I have more than 200 items in one library it’s time to make a new library. No performance issues what so ever.

If it becomes illegal they can sink a meathook through the largest part of my @ss and drag me over the Tundra to a Siberian Prison Camp and there I will spend the rest of my days because I WILL NOT put all my movies in a folder. Period.

If Plex suddenly stops working because my movies aren’t in a folder I’ll uninstall Plex and go back to the HDMI cable that still runs from my computer to the TV and that’ll be the end of that.

Some heavy folder rules apply here. I use folders as there are often extras or series/ eps involved.

As for the topic discussion, i would try just for the fun off it.

  1. use all low case
  2. different storage location for offending file
  3. Was the offending file deleted but in storage remained. I have seen this before. (add a numeral to name)
  4. Spell the file if known different.

See what happens

@JuiceWSA Plex supports your style just as my style and I’d highly doubt they would change this so neither of us have to worry.

I couldn’t imagine creating a new library once I hit about 200 movies. I’ve got over 9000 movies in one Library and about 31,000 tv shows in another library.

I like the “broken down” by directory approach because it’s fast to access via FTP or even windows explorer over a network or VPN. It’s sluggish with that many files in one directory.

It’s funny, how different things bother different people. You obviously wouldn’t want to do the individual directories where I wouldn’t want a bunch of different Libraries just for Movies.

That’s the beauty of Plex in that we can each configure it from this respect exactly how we want it to work and it does!
