Low bitrate on android app

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

When I select 192 as my streaming bitrate when outside if my home network, on the regular plex app it streams in 128. If I select original, it streams whatever the files are. If I use the plexamp app, it streams at whatever bitrate I set it to. Is the regular plex app limited in some way?

The quality setting for music is unlike the quality settings for videos. That setting is the threshold when music will be transcoded. The quality used will be 128 or the threshold, which ever is higher.

Edit - Sorry about that. Should have been lower.

Thanks for the response. I understand that is the threshold but everything comes through transcoded to 128 when the setting is 192. Unless the “playback info” button shows inaccurate information?

See my edit above.

Thanks again. Though I still think I am not being very clear perhaps. I set the limit to 192. If I stream a file remotely that is originally 320, it transcodes and streams to 128 in the regular Plex mobile app. That same file streamed remotely to plexamp, transcodes/streams correctly at 192.

Plexamp is different. I’ll have to check what it’s suppose to do, but the Android app is behaving as it should.

  • File is 320. The threshold is 192. File is above threshold so it will transcode.
  • threshold is 192, default is 128, which is lower --> file will transcode to 128

The Android app has no options to transcode to anything above 128. It will only direct play those.

So it transcodes to 128 if the original file is over 192? That is different than what I was thinking. I assumed it was similar to plexamp in that it transcodes anything over 192 to 192. Thank you for clearing that up.

Is there any way to change the default from 128? I find 192 to be the best compromise between streaming file size and sound quality and would prefer it if possible. Thanks again.
