Lower 1080p Remote Setting

Hey there!

Thank you for all the amazing years of work put into Plex. I’ve been using it since XBMC 0.x and have never turned back!

I’ve now moved to another country and therefore I’m exclusively relying on the upload speed of my internet speed back home where my Plex Server is still located. My upload speed is hovering between 5-5.5mbps.

Unfortunately there isn’t an option between 4mbps 720p and 8mbps 1080p. I was wondering whether you could possibly introduce a lower barrier to 1080p entry at the 5mbps mark. I played a file that was native 5.8mbps 1080p and it looked sooo much better than the 4mbps 720p setting on my 55" TV. Unfortunately for any video at a higher 1080p bitrate, the 8mbps 1080p setting would make my connection choke.

Thanks in advance!

A natively encoded file will almost always look better than a file that is transcoded in realtime.
The reason for this is the encoding process.
The encoder can only optimize the result by ‘trying’ several different encoding strategies. Of course this will require more time and produces additional CPU load.
Therefore, when a “realtime” transcoding is performed, this optimization doesn’t happen. Resulting in poorer quality, even though the bitrate is the same.

The only thing you can do is to either:
Acquire files which are already encoded in the desired bitrate
or
Optimize your files beforehand. The optimizer in Plex uses not the “realtime” transcoding settings. You can even decide how much time you want to give the transcoder. The “slower” the settings, the better the quality will be.
(Settings - Server - Transcoder - ‘Show Advanced’ - "Background transcoding x264 preset ")
Then at playback time use the ‘Play Version’ ability of your Plex Client. Most Plex clients have it and allow you this way to select the optimized version.

agree, 6 Mbps 1080p are perfect also for me. I hope they will update the list in a future update.

a other way you change it manuell in the registry. i have test this and it works, but only when you set 5500 and higher it works with 1080p i think. But i also testing with my users.

Do your clients not support the Automatically adjust quality setting? If so give this a shot.
