MacOS Player Crashes Streams

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: 1.87.1.75-e23570d9
Logs available if needed.

Within the last few days streams to the desktop Mac client have been crashing with a generic ‘There was an unexpected error during playback’ message. Reviewing server logs shows a cascade of ‘Subscription: Error refreshing sub: Target section location does not exist’ errors occurring when this happens. Attempts to replicate this on other clients (iOS) have failed using the same media and configurations. Issue is replicate-able on all media files tried.

Getting same error here since today.

  • Server version#:
    • 1.40.0.7998 , running plex’s official docker image plexinc/pms-docker:plexpass
    • and 1.32.8.7649: I downgraded, and the problem still occurs, so I suspect the problem is in the new player release, not the new server release.
  • Player version#: 1.87.1.75-e23570d9
  • macOS (on which the player is running) version#: Sonoma 14.2.1 running on Apple M1 Max 64 GB

It’s becoming more and more frequent as the evening goes on, and driving me nuts (it’s being doing it every few seconds 4 times in a row, so I’m coming to the forum, and glad to see I’m not alone!). Never had that issue before. No other active users on the server.

Would need the desktop player logs.

“Subscriptions” usually refers to either downloads (like always download the last X unwatched) or Scheduled DVR recordings. Recordings happen all on the server so doubt it is that and may have nothing do due with issue with Mac app, wondering if y’all have any downloads set up in the mac desktop app.

Agreed, that’s desktop-side. Attached are the desktop player logs, caught immediately after the error appeared (and I minimized the window), on a different video than yesterday. It does seem to be independent of the video.

Plex.log.zip (139.9 KB)

I was not watching a Download. Streaming from my NAS.

Also am having crashing on Mac OSX 14.3.1, only recently. The playback stoppages seem to occur every 10 minutes or so which is pretty frustrating.

Desktop logs attached from a quick 7 minute crash with a fresh open.

Plex.log.zip (33.7 KB)

And another Desktop log, different video again.
Plex.log.zip (37.4 KB)

Still present in 1.87.2.87-87488d5a. (Desktop) Logs attached.

Plex.log (1.5 MB)

I’ve found a workaround…don’t use plex.tv.

When I go directly to ip:port (ip of the media server inside my network) it seems rock solid. This also essentially proves the issue is a network thing with plex.tv.

@jaredsheath these folks are using the desktop player app not the web browser.

sorry to all then…the web app is busted too though…

I have the same problem but i found a workaround. the issue is on this update Plex-1.87.2.87-87488d5a-universal. uninstall that one and use an earlier app. i use this one Plex-1.86.1.4076-a3ab948d-universal and it work perfect. turn of your internet / wifi when starting the app so it doesnt update and when plex is started turn wifi back on.

dont restart the app with wifi then you need to reinstall since it will update on restart

i dont experience the problem on other devices

and yes the webb app dont work. if there is a app made specific to mac shouldnt it be tested before launch?
