MacOS Plex Server - All Libraries Gone

One day, following a reboot of my macOS PMS, all libraries are GONE! Media files are intact and playable on the system, so no issue there. Rolled the entire system back one week, still everything missing. Rolled the machine back an entire MONTH and still nothing. How can this happen, and how does one recover the lost playlists, libraries and artwork? Thanks experts!

Rule 1: don’t try to restore by rolling back with time machine

How exactly are you accessing your server? Are you able to see the server settings?

Hi there, yes, I can see all the settings. I can access the server by IP or host name, or locally on the machine, nothing shows up. It just asks me to add a library. Thanks much for your help!

You’re running the server from the same (Mac) user on your macOS device?

If you recently applied some upgrade to macOS… does the PMS have permission to access your media? → System Settings > Security/Privacy > …

As for permissions in general… can you see the media folder(s) and files from within the library’s Add Folder modal? (no need to re-add anything… this will however give you an impression if Plex can still see the files)

The last two questions are more generic and will most likely only be relevant if only the library content is gone (but not the entire libraries)

Hello and thanks for the response. The Mac is running 10.11 so the crazy security settings should not be needed. I’ve checked permissions on the drive and they appear correct. I can navigate and browse to the media locations from within Plex. Thanks, Dave

What about this one?

Hi there, yes they’re both running in the same user account.

both?

I think yo may have nailed it! I was logging into the machine and launching PMS using a different user account!. Doh!
