macOS server soft crash

Ive been having a similar issue. The PMS service crashes in the background and requires me to quit the app and then open it again. I thought it was because of transcoding subtitles on some clients but I changed a few things the transcoding subtitles issue went away, now the service hangs multiple times a day. The logs aren’t shedding any light on it either.

Mine was working fine until around 2 hours ago, running the 1.40.3.8355-923a3b226 version. At the time of the crash no active users were on the server.

Do you mind sharing your server logs @waynematier . It might be a different crash.

The only log I can send is the Plex log from 10pm (GMT) from the Plex logs folder, I can share three console logs from the exact time the service crashed if they are of any help?

You don’t want to message all of them , or can’t?

I totally can no problem at all! Just didn’t know if you wanted all the logs or not! I have attached the log from Plex at 10pm and three logs from console in the zip file. If a zip file won’t do I will upload them separately. Thanks ro looking into this!

@waynematier Those are the logs from the desktop player. Is that is what is crashing for you? Is the server still running?

This topic is about the server crashing not the player

What is crashing for me is the PMS service on the Mac. My library is not available but yet the PMS app is ‘running’ i.e. the icon is present in the Finder menu bar but none of the libraries are available outside the home network or locally. I have to quit the PMS app and relaunch it for the services to go back online. And apologies for the wrong logs, this is all a bit new to me on the forum here. Attached is the log from the time when the service stopped.

@waynematier I moved this to a new topic since I think this is a different issue than the other crash.

the other is a hard crash meaning the server app actually stops running completely not just becoming unavailable.

After you relaunch it go to the troubleshooting settings ( Towards the bottom of the left side bar in settings) and download the zip file of all the logs. The one you send me does not have much info in it.

Thanks for that! It hasn’t crashed at all today but when it does, and it will, I’ll do exactly what you have said and upload those logs.

The server crashed this morning, no-one was on it and it was idle when it crashed. I downloaded the logs for you and I have attached them to this.

What kind of PMS server version are you running? This looks to be some kind of preview or alpha.

In any case, there is an new official beta which contains a fix for crashing specifically on Mac: Plex Media Server - #622 by gbooker02

There was a version suggested on a previous forum post that seemed to solve the issue but as BigWheel pointed out my issue was very different and he split my issue off into this thread.

Hi everyone, I am running the new PMS version on the beta channel and it’s been running great until now. I went to check to see if it was running and it had crashed. I have attached the logs to this so fingers crossed it sheds some light on something.

Hi there, couple more logs for you to look at if you want. The log 024-04-20_16-33-18 had two users on it when it crashed and last nights log when the server had no users watching anything. Hope this all helps!, W

This may not be related to your issue. Firstly are you on Intel or Apple Silicon? Recently I updated to a Mac Mini M2 Pro from a Intel iMac 2020. On the intel Mac there were at times soft crashes which in the end put down to Corrupt DNS cache. Try flushing your cache if this Resonates. Good luck.

Thanks for that! I’m running it on a MacPro 6,1. I flushed the DNS so fingers crossed it helps or even solves my issue! Thanks!
