Major server and direct connection issues

been using plex fine for years on my mac. when i upgraded to catalina, its like the media server stopped working. its just freezes when i try to open it. ive tried unstalling and reinstalling with no result.

i can still access the plex web player, but i cannot get direct connection to a friends library and all videos are capped at 2 Mbps at 720p, no matter what changes i make in settings.

  1. Do YOU run your own server? Or are you just a client?
  2. Does the problem you’re experiencing lie with YOUR server, or your Friends?
  3. Direct connection to your Friends server is an issue on their end, not on yours, it would mean they have port forwarding or firewall issues of some kind, what you’re experiencing is called Plex Relay, and is 2Mbit for Plex Pass users, and 1Mbit for everyone else.

The Plex media server app wont load on my Mac. So idk how that answers #1

The problem lies with my server app, or my mac

sometimes i can get better than 2mbps/720p, and sometimes I cant, but I cant figure out why. i change Quality settings to maximum, I allow for insecure connections, and the problem still comes up most of the time

also the 2 MBps limit was happening beofre i had plex pass. i wasnt limited to 1mbps

For the first question, plex has 2 apps. One for a server, where you host your own content on your pc/mac to serve to yourself and others, and one for a client, where you connect, either to your own server, or to your friends server. If you don’t have your own content on your mac that you wish to serve to yourself or to others, then the “Plex Media Server” app is not the app for you. You want the “Plex” app for mac. Go here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app and choose MAC, and make sure it’s on Apps & Devices instead of Plex Media Server.

The 2Mbps limitation on the “Indirect Connection” is if your friend has Plex Pass, not if you have Plex Pass, so if he had it, the limitation for his relay is 2Mbps. Also, if you don’t have your own server, meaning you don’t serve your own content, then there is no reason to have Plex Pass really. All of the Plex Pass features are for Server Owners (Live TV & DVR, Plex Sync of your own Content, etc) for the most part. It’s simply not worth it (in my opinion) to have Plex Pass if you’re not running your own server and sharing your content.

Hopefully this clarifies things?

thanks but not really ive been using the mac app as well, not able to get the good quality with that either.

this is either a deeper lying issue with my Settings, or his I guess, but hes told me nothing has changed on his end.

That was simply in response to your question about what I meant by the first question. Not an answer to your problems. You cannot fix the issue that you’re having if it’s only happening with his server.

An Indirect Connection means that you’re unable to connect to his server because something is blocking the port on his end. The way this works is, you sign in to plex, you make the choice of which server you want to view on, and then plex attempts to link you directly. If a direct connection is not possible, plex takes over and relays the information according to the account of the server owner. So, because he has Plex Pass, you’re getting 2Mbit/s from his server, because you cannot directly connect to it.

If you had your own server, setup correctly, you could also test with that from another device not on your network (like a cell phone over cellular data), you would likely be able to connect to yours directly, but only connect to his indirectly at times because of whatever is going on on his end. This limitation exists on his end, not on yours.

The reason I asked the first question was to clarify if you have your OWN server, or if the problems experienced were with HIS server. Your initial post was worded confusingly, so I couldn’t figure out if you were connecting to your server, or to his, and where the problem was.
