Many unnecessary transcodes triggered on Samsung 2020 TVs

There are a lot of situations that trigger a transcode that really shouldn’t. This is kinda terrible for anything 4K because my 7700k can barely handle decoding the file, much less re encoding it again. Not to mention the HDR metadata is lost on transcode, so the colors all look washed out.

Here are some of them:

  • Using SRT subtitles embedded on matroska containers sometimes causes plex to transcode the file (I saw something in the changelog about this, but it’s still happening)
  • When playing incompatible audio, the video also gets transcoded
  • 4K 60fps HDR seems to always get transcoded no matter what (I only have one movie like that (Gemini Man) so I couldn’t test it further. It does play fine on the TV using the built in DLNA player and SimpleDLNA though)
