I have an Issue with my Samsung Smart TV from 2020 (4k HDR). Some videos are played via direct stream (4K HDR) and some being transcoded to 4k h264 SDR. On my S22 Ultra and Xiaomi TVs all Videos are being played at the full Quality 4K HDR, all in my Local network and set to original quality in the settings. All my videos are evenly converted to MP4 @h265. What could be the issue, that my TV sometimes plays my videos via driect stream, and sometimes not? Server and App are all up to date. I hope somebody could help me out.
During playback bring up the on screen controller. Then on the right menu ( the three dots under the end time) in Playback options enable playbak information. When you return to playback then that info will be overlayed of the video with info including basic info on why it cannot direct play and asked the server to transcode.
I found the reason, the playback information on the Samsung TV shows, that it does not support the ASS subtitle format, so it needs to be converted. When deactivating the subitles, the movie plays in 4k HDR. I don’t know how subtitles work, but it’s a bit strange for me, the whole video needs to be transcoded, just for the subtitles.
