"Mark as read" not working

As of today, the forums are behaving differently.

If you go into a forum that has a mixture of read and unread threads, then select ‘Mark Category Viewed’ from the gear menu, the unread threads are still marked as unread.

Observed in Firefox 46 on Windows 7, and Firefox 46 on Linux Mint 17.1.

I’ve noticed this as well and alerted those that need be alerted. Thanks!

Yup. Chrome too.

there were some issues yesterday but it is currently working for me. can y’all try again

It seems better today, but still a problem that’s actually reversed from yesterday’s behavior.

One aspect of yesterday’s behavior was that, if I was in a forum and selected “Mark Category Viewed,” it wouldn’t change the status of the individual threads. But if I went back to the Home page, the forum would be darkened (I’m using Vanstinator’s theme), indicating everything in it was marked as viewed.

Today, I go into a forum and select “Mark Category Viewed.” All of the individual threads are marked as read, as I expect. But when I went to the Home page, that forum appeared to have unread items. This didn’t happen every time. I follow a dozen categories, and this happened on 2 of them. The rest behaved as expected.

I was at home this morning and marked my recent threads as read… it didn’t.
I got to work and checked the same threads and all are marked.
May have had something to do with browser cache.
(I too use @vanstinator 's great theme - in Chrome).

Clearing cache doesn’t seem to resolve anything for me.

It’s definitely not my theme. Something is up with vanilla would be my guess.

There have definitely been some issues with vanilla and hopefully many things will get fixed with the maintenance they are doing this weekend. I will need to try to reliably reproduce with theme off so the theme is not blamed for it. then hopefully the Vanilla folks can see it happen and diagnose/fix whatever the root cause is.

thx for report

Yeah, it’s not the theme. I tried with theme off, and, although the background colors aren’t different for read and unread, the “xx New” indicators are still there.

I have the same hopes for their maintenance plan.

@BigWheel , Vanilla’s maintenance project over the weekend does not appear to have changed this behavior.

@BigWheel , any update on this? It seems to be getting worse. It’s to the point that I don’t bother selecting ‘Mark Category Viewed’ anymore. Now I go back to the home page and mark the category viewed from there. Has Vanilla said anything?

@beckfield I’m on Firefox 47 on Windows 10 and it is working properly for me.

The only difference is that I don’t use the category I usually use the “Mark All Viewed” from the gear at the top right. I’ll try marking a category and see if I see the same thing you are however.

Edit: Mark Category seems to be working as well. Can you try in a different browser?

Here’s what I’ve done:

Firefox 47 on Linux mint at home, on Windows 7 at work. I also have Chrome and IE 11 at work.

  1. In Firefox (on Windows), find a forum with at least one unread thread.
  2. Mark all threads as read (doesn’t matter if you open each one, or select ‘Mark Category Viewed’ from the Gear menu at the top right).
  3. At the top of the page, click the ‘Home’ breadcrumb.

At this point, I expect that the forum I was just in would show as being read (darker background with Vanstinator’s theme; no visible indication in default theme). But the forum still appears with a lighter (themed) background, so it is not as expected. I have cleared cache, forced reload from network, but the status doesn’t change.

Now I launch Chrome, which has never been to the Plex Forum website (at least not in recent weeks), so no cached info is possible. The forum appears to have unread messages within, but when I enter the forum, no threads are marked as having new messages.

So it’s not a caching issue.

Next thing I tried:
In Chrome (default theme):

Of course, the default theme shows no indication whether a forum has unread threads or not.
  4. In Firefox, clear cache, force network reload. Forum appears to have unread threads.
  5. Open the forum, there are no unread threads.

To be clear, the nature of this problem has changed since the original post, as I mentioned in my first post of May 12 above. Now, when I select ‘Mark Category Viewed,’ all threads in the current forum are successfully marked as read. That was not originally working.

Since the forum home page using the default theme does not indicate whether a forum has unread threads within, it may be easy to blame this on vanstinator’s theme, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case.
