Media keeps staying "Unavailable"

Actually, I think this is the thread on the NVIDIA forums. It shows that certain files “go missing” until you remount the SMB share, but I think it’s related - https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/972125/missing-files-folders-on-smb-mounted-file-systems/

This thread is flagged as “answered”. Is it?

No it’s not. Answered threads have a green box that says answered in it. A grey box just means someone replied.

This seems like the same/related issue:

I just had the same thing happen to my box. As soon as it falls asleep it looses the smb connection to the nas. Very annoying. Will do a reset and see if it helps.

Please submit a ticket or reply in the thread at geforce/nvdia forums, so far they haven’t been able to reproduce this bug.

The main Bad thing about Plex Server running on Nvidia Shield is actually not Plex itself, its that it relay on the underlying OS to handle storage instead of having the functionality built into Plex

The Nvidia Shield implementation of storage/SMB mapping is broken in so many ways

And one example is that if fails to do SMP over IP, it even fails to map it classic Netbios as it requires Netbios Broadcast to detect hosts/shares wish limits the NAS location to the same IP-network (no routers allowed)

Ideal would be to integrate the functionality directly into Plex, where for example ES Explorer is an excellent example that it can be done and get to work on the Nvidia Shield

I submitted my issue to Nvidia in January and got a reply that they were aware of the bug. Got a general “when a fix is made available it will be pushed to the system via a software update” statement but at least I know they are aware of it.

I had this problem with my synology NAS. After a couple of hours it would show the media as unavailable. Now I’ve disabled ipv6 in the nvidia network settings and remounted the SMB share (re-typing password etc) and it’s been contected all day - fingers crossed it stays like this.

Got this tip from Nvidia support as well, but I already had ipv6 disabled… They do have another user with the same issue, and they see the problem in the logs, so I hope we’ll have a fix soon…

I have this issue every time the Plex app or Shield software is updated.

I’m still struggling with this problem. Is there anyone who has found a solution?

I think I’m experiencing this same problem. Mine isn’t even a network mounted share or SMB or NAS, it’s a locally attached USB hard drive on the Shield.

I’m having a similar issue but it’s not due to the NAS going to sleep as it has happened to me whilst playing a file. Film stops and when I try to restart it’s unavailable.

The issue started before the last update so I can’t work it out!

Same issue as above user. After waiting >12 months for a fix to the whole adapted storage problem, finally re-created my library on the shield, only to find out all the workarounds required to get the thing working.

  1. Server not starting issue
  2. Media Unavailable issue wrt NAS.
I really am glad I haven’t purchased the ‘plex pass’. I believe that plex really needs to focus on their core programming, rather than ‘features’.
Anyhow, i’ll check in another 12 months if it’s fixed. Back to Kodi for me.

Was a fan. But with the (repeated ) reintroduction of this bug - I give up.

I’m more inclined to believe this is an issue with Plex on the Shield than problems with the Shield OS.
My NAS holds all my media, and I’ve used Archos Media Player on the Shield to access my content on the NAS since 2015.
Plex drops the NAS connection after a short period of time, and does not reconnect. Archos or any number of file explorers never exhibit any problems accessing the NAS. The only app with the problem is Plex.
It prevents me using the Shield as a media server, which is what I originally intended to use it for.

Hi all-

I just had this same frustrating experience. I found it happening a few months ago then it was stable for quite a while, then just yesterday I came down to our media room and tried to watch something only to find all the media was marked “Unavailable”. However, the plex media server running on my MacBook pro was able to see and serve the exact same SMB library (it is connected to an Asus router) and I have tried:

  1. turning off/on plex server from settings in Plex app
  2. rebooting the Shield
  3. removing and restoring SMB connection from the Shield settings
  4. power cycling the drives on the Asus USB (then rebooting the Shield again)

none of these worked to restore the connection and I had to use our LG TV Plex app to watch the film served from the MacBook Pro (as I recall even though the Plex LG app saw the MBP, the Shield still wouldn’t play the media) which I found odd and indicative of an issue with the Shield player/server app since the same source worked for the MBP/LG Plex app config.
