Media not found when using CIFS between 2 separate Synology DSNs

Server Version#:1.42.2.10156-700010156
Player Version#:
I have Plex Media Server installed on a Synology NAS. Everything works as expected with local folders & files.

The Drive is low on space so I have a second Synology NAS on the same LAN with a folder containing more video files.

On the PMS I have set up a remote connection (CIFS) to the second ‘slave’ NAS.

In File Station the remote Folder(s) is available and can be navigated, video files can be downloaded and/or played.

I am guessing this is a Plex Permissions issue.

I cannot find where I can set the permissions for the remote CIFS folder to allow Plex to access it.

If I go to the permissions for each individual folder in the CIFS folder I can create a new user for PlexMediaServer but it fails with a Windows ACL error and there is surely a better way to set permissions rather than on each and every folder.

This has all worked before, I am confuse as to what has changed.

Any ideas?

If you’re sharing data between Synology machines, use NFS.
CIFS is Windows. Synology is Linux. Linux ↔ Linux needs NFS

When I try NFS I get ‘Connection failed. Please make sure the remote server is accessible via NFS’.

NFS is running on both NAS. I have tried with both NFS v3 & v4.

Both NAS are on the same LAN & IP Range ,i.e. 192.168.2.110 & 129.168.2.112

Firewall is not running on either NAS.

Did you also export the shared folder (NFS rule) ?

Control Panel → Shared Folder - EDIT the shared folder - CREATE a rule to export the shared folder ?

If you don’t, there will be nothing to share and you won’t get a response.

I have done that.

192.168.2.110 is the PMS.

I set this NFS Rule on the second NAS which is 192.168.2.112

On the 2nd syno, go into the permissions,

Highlight the shared folder - Right-Click → Properties → Permissions

Give permission to Everyone (Read)

Apply to this folder , sub-folders, and files.

Synology is VERY odd & secure with permissions between machines.

I’ve added the user ‘Everyone’ to the Folder on the second NAS and given it Read permissions.

On the PMS NAS the remote folder has the Everyone user but has Read/Write permissions.

The Folder on the PMS NAS is empty as you suggested.

Still can’t past the Connection failed problem.
