Media server stuck on "Starting"?

I have to admit, I'm sort of flummoxed - no indication of what's wrong, and working fine from the command line.

What sort of hardware?

Out of curiosity I looked at and compared the python2.5 framework to another source and found the directory xml missing. Replaced it and voila it is working. I appreciate your doggedness though.

Let me also say that PLEX has converted my wife into a user, which is no small feat. For that congrats.

Eric and Out

PS. PLEX box for my other tv's would be nice.

Glad to hear you were able to resolve, thanks for the update :)

I am having the same problem and am a total noob. I have plex installed on my mini mac no problem. I tried to install it on my MBP and it just bounces and never starts. I have re-installed twice and deleted plug ins to no avail.

If someone has time please can they give me simple instructions understanding that I am not a developer in the slightest and never use Terminal for instance. Thanks.

That sounds like a very different problem (and if it's what I think it is, it's much easier to fix :)).
Does your computer have a name? You set it under System Preferences > Sharing.

many thanks for the swift and quick response!

Awesome app.

Just had this problem yesterday and solved it using the above method. After installing 0.9.2.3 i reappeared and now it cannot be solved in the same way.

Any other tricks?

Hmm, was the computer name gone again after the update? Or was it still there?

The blank computer name issue should now (hopefully) be resolved, I believe. However, it appears that the same sort of behavior is now being caused by a handful of plugins "because of some semi-bogus XML" according to Elan. Two such identified plugins are "Teleboy" and "Amazon" (Amazon VOD or possibly another, I'm not completely clear). So, go take a look here in Finder:

*~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/*

If you have a .bundle file there for either of those plugins, then please delete it or move it out to somewhere else. Hopefully, Plex should start for you then. If you don't have either of those plugins, then it's quite possible there might be some additional ones causing issues. If so, try the following:

1. Move the contents of the above folder somewhere else (for example, into a folder on your desktop).

2. Launch Plex and it ought to start up correctly and it'll re-populate that folder with the core/base plugins. Make sure the Plex client is in windowed mode (CMD-F or the "\" key) so that you can see the OSX menubar.

3. Close Plex (and the Plex Media Server).

4. Copy one of your plugins (you don't need to worry about the ones that were auto-recreated) back into the normal folder and see if Plex launches.

5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until you identify a plugin that's causing the problem.

If you do find such a new plugin, please let us know! Hopefully, this should get you back up and running.

Hi,

I’ve upgraded my Python version and removed all plugins … No changes … It’s a clean SL install on a Mac Mini … I’m clueless … Anyone?

Oh … And no more music, tv or movies items appears … I don’t even have the option in the plex menu …

Thanks for your help!

My Mac Mini is also stuck on “Starting” in the Plex Media Server.

The Mac has just been formatted and no applications had been installed on the Plex installations what so ever. It is a complete fresh Plex installation and have had this problem sense very first startup.

Help anyone?

By the way, I have tried the solutions mentioned in this thread…

Have you tried running the Python command from Terminal like Jam suggested earlier in this thread?

I have this exact problem.

soroushk, can you zip up the folder:

<br />
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Data/com.plexapp.system/<br />

and upload it in a reply? Thanks!

Also, then try setting the directory aside (rename) and restart PMS.

Tried renaming Data to Data.old, didn't work.

com.plexapp.system.zip (21.9 KB)

No clue what it was (looked like some weird JSON error), but renaming ~L/AS/PMS/Plug-in Support/Caches to Caches.old fixes it. Hope that helps someone.

I got this problem right around when I upgraded to 10.6.7, if that helps.

I’ve got the same problem after enabling the “empty trash automatically” option.

I moved the plugins and cache folder contents and it works fine now.

hmmm

just erased that framework.bundle, without success.

any ideas

Please set aside this file:

<br />
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches/com.plexapp.system/HTTP.system/CacheInfo<br />

and see if that fixes things. If so, please zip up and upload the file.
