Media server stuck on "Starting"?

great

it works

thanks

Can you upload that file, please? It’ll help us perform forensics on it

Hi All

I downloaded and installed the latest plex nine version 0.9.2.7 on the 13 April 2011 onto my iMac OS X 10.6.7 / Intel no problem. However when I want to start it it gives me the message “Please wait a moment while the media server starts for the first time” After about 20 second or so later the message disappears and nothing is happening. No error message no nothing. I have no clue what the problem may be. Could it have something to do that I am residing in Sri Lanka? Is plex only working if you are in the USA?

Appreciate a feedback as I cannot find anything in the forum nor on the plex web site.

Thanks

Welcome to Plex, smartasp. =)

No, Plex isn’t restricted to the US, so that shouldn’t be an issue for you. There was an old bug that would cause problems with Plex starting if your computer didn’t have a name specified (OS X System Preferences > Sharing), but that was supposed to have been fixed. Still, can you check to make sure you have a name specified there? If not, put one in and then try running Plex again.

If you continue to experience problems starting, can you please zip up and attach the following two log files to a reply?

~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server.log

~/Library/Logs/PMS Plugin Logs/com.plexapp.system.log

(Where “~” is your user home directory)

Hello guys (and girls), i have the same problem, but this fix doesnt work for me, and it might have something to do with some kind of dubble installtion,

when i open user/library/application support/ i have the following maps:

  1. Plex
  2. Plex Media Server
  3. Plex Media Server.v8
  4. Plex.v8

am i supposed to delete v8 since the beta is up to .9 now?

    Anybody have any ideas?

attaching my system.log if that helps.

    Thanks in advance!

No, the old "v8" directories being present there won't cause any problems. Those were simply created when you upgraded from Plex/Eight to Plex/Nine as a backup of the old .8 data.

When you say "this fix", what are you referring to? This thread has existed a long time and there have been several separate issues that have caused startup problems from time to time and thus different fixes.

If you haven't, please try what [Elan mentioned](http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/17557-media-server-stuck-on-starting/page__view__findpost__p__162681) on the previous page (and when he says "set aside", he means to move the file elsewhere).

Hi Chris

Thanks for your information. I appreciate your effort. I deleted all and forget about it as it is to complicated.

I simply do not have the time to dig into this problem. A software should be installable perhaps with one or two questions on the way and thats it. I may miss out on a good thing but so be it.

Cheers

Okey good to know, i did try what he mentioned but i didnt work, i zipped my logs if that helps, is there any uninstall program that really cleans up everything, i mean, so there is no files left? Celan out and start over?

You can completely remove Plex by following these instructions.

If you’d like to try one other thing before you uninstall/reinstall, then:

  1. Delete (or move elsewhere) the following two directories:

    ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/

    ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches/

  2. Try starting Plex again.

YES, this seems to worked things out, and now when i thought(spelling?) about it, this problem might have started when i tried to install a new plugin, so that might be the problem, that all the plugins aint compatible with the new 9 version (im saying this without any knowledge about any kind och programming).

Thank you Chris C, if you are in sweden, anytime in gothenburg i´ll give you a beer :)!

This fix works! So it seems it's a plug-in issue. I was having the same issue, PMS stuck on "starting" and was concerned I might have to redo all my library which would be nuts, but thankfully it wasn't necessary. Thanks :)

My god am I happy moving the plugins folders fixed this for me, I was the same scared migueld and I’m sure a lot of other people. Thanks a lot guys!

Hi guys,

Maybe I am in the wrong thread but need help!

Need to say that I love Plex. I have been using for 2 years and it has worked great… until I tried to upgrade to Plex 0.9.3.4 (I think my old version was 0.7.x something). I’ve tried to remove and re-install the application like 15 times with no luck. I have read so much here and nothing seems to help (I have a name for my computer under “System Settings/Sharing/Computer name” and I’ve tried all other suggestions here.

The only thing I get is the Plex icon bouncing in the dock and then it stops bouncing and remains in the dock but no dot under it (like there is for applications that are running).

I’ve tried to find some logs but there are nothing. Not in the MacOS logs and the Plex logs does not even appear.

The strange thing is that I don’t even get anything under ~/Library/Application Support. To me it seems like it doesn’t even install properly. Any help is much appreciated! Need my Plex working!

Thanks

Edit: I have tried repairing the disk permissions with no change :frowning:

I am also having an issue with media server stuck on starting. Even on a new mini, I am getting the same issue. I have removed the plugins as well as the plug-in caches, with no luck!

It seems to only be the main machine, so I wonder if there is a compatibility issue once I upgraded to lion with another application on it.

this is where she stops, no idea as to why…

Here is the full log! Any help would kick all manner of ass!

on another note, downgrading to 0.9.2.6 works great. No idea what’s up?!

And it doesn't work in 0.9.2.7?

Typo on my part, sorry!

It does work on 0.9.2.7 in Lion 10.7.1

new machine, new OS install - removed all plugins and cache files... it's bizarre...

Do you happen to have two network interfaces running? For example using an ethernet cable but also having WiFi enabled? If so, can you please disable WiFi an see if it makes any difference at all. It is a longshot, but worth a try.

I don’t have anything but ethernet running. I am going to start uninstalling other things until it works!

I appreciate the help everyone!
