Media Server Will not update

Server Version#: 1.29.2.6364
Player Version#: Version 4.87.2

I keep getting requests to update but it will not update; numoerusous issues.

  1. Very early on - and I consider this a new installation as I’ve only been using it since mid December - a software “loop” (need update, attempted updated, update fails, need update, etc…) required me to “skip an update”: that was my only option if I wanted to use Plex.

  2. I’ve since received a couple of notifications to update. Each time they fail. Plex indicates that it successfully downloads the software - and then states the “Server” is installing an update… Grab a cup of tea. That message never changes - ever.

It would be good to get the update mechanism to work - because after a few Windows updates they might be necessary.

Is there a manual way to do a Server update “in place” - so all settings etc., are kept?

All you need to do is:

  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows
(do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.
do not use “Registry Cleaner/optimizer” software like CCleaner et al)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the newer version and install it

(If you want to install an older version of PMS, take a look into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates)

Thanks OttoKerner - as usual you are there to help!

I appreciate you.

I’ll attempt this evening and advise.

Just FYI - that all worked… thanks again!
