Meta Data - How is it Downloaded?

How is meta data downloaded?

I use(d) Media Center Master, which nicely renames files properly and downlaods loads of metadata, posters and such.

I understand Plex only reads data from NFO files and will use posters and banners when present but all .XML files are useless - is that correct?

If I plop a new TV series in a folder and Plex starts scraping the info for it, will Plex then download the meta data it needs? Where does it put that stuff? Media Center Master puts it in the folders where the video is, sometimes creating a hidden “metadata” folder to store the XML files.

Sorry for the basic question - looking at a new system so just want to get it right first time.

Plex doesn’t make any changes to the underlying files, except for allowing deletions under certain circumstances.

Not really. We will pick up IMDb ids from NFOs for movies, but that’s it. NFO and XML files server no purpose other than that small use case.

You can however place assets like posters, art, theme music, extras, subtitles, etc. in the media paths which can be used (see: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/)

Yes, as long as the filenames are suitably understandable (see https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/) it will match automatically and pull in all the necessary metadata, the metadata is stored inside the Plex data folders and not in the media paths.
