Meta Data Problem

I’m not sure if there is a search feature in the forum but maybe because I’m a new user its disabled. Im currently trying to figure out if there is a way to override meta data on select files. I have both versions of Red Dawn and for some reason Plex is ignoring my edited meta data for the original version and labeling it as the more recent version of the movie. I can’t imagine im the only one to see this issue. For Most of the movies, Ive noticed that it IS in fact using my hand placed cover art, but not for a few of the movies…

Please show the file names you have used for both versions.

Is every movie in its own subfolder? If so, please also tell the name of that subfolder.

Also important is whether your files are in the mp4/m4v container format or not. Because Plex can read embedded metadata from these. If they contain wrong metadata, they can cause Plex to “mismatch” the file.

every movie has its own folder,

Movies/Red Dawn 1984
Movies/Red Dawn 2012

both are mp4 files. and both file names were red dawn, I have now renamed one to red dawn1984.mp4 and the other to red dawn2012.mp4 to see if it makes a difference. I will know once the library rescans here in a few minutes. Thank you for the reply .

Please follow the link I’ve set above. It shows that the year should be enclosed in parentheses.
After renaming the files, you may have to perform the Plex Dance to remove the mismatch from the Plex database.

Do also verify that your files don’t contain any contradicting information in their embedded ‘Title’ metatags. Best way is to remove these tags completely.

Movies/Red Dawn (1984)/Red Dawn (1984).ext
Movies/Red Dawn (2012)/Red Dawn (2012).ext

for example, here are mine.

/data/media/movies/Red Dawn (1984)/Red Dawn (1984) Bluray-720p [DTS 5.1][x264].mkv
/data/media/movies/Red Dawn (2012)/Red Dawn (2012) Bluray-1080p [DTS 5.1][x264].mkv

if you need a tool to bulk rename, many people recommend filebot.

First I would like to say think you… I have now got it to show the correct cover art for both. They both show 1984 even after I stripped out my metadata and set the file structure to match yours so I will continue to work that one out… I also by following your link I was able to fix my two part goodfellas and two part robin hood price of thieves , so thanks a million for that one. All in all I think I’ve made tremendous headway, and I think you for that.
