ok, so posted about metadata and it got closed, and i couldnt reply. however, whoever closed it just assumed i was using tvdb. when i use themoviedb for my tv series, it still doesnt work. how would tvdb api have effect on themoviedb??
It’s not enough to change the agent settings and rescan/refresh metadata. Plex remembers the previous agent was used for the initial match and reuses it. To force it to use the newly configured agent for matching and metadata, follow the procedure outlined here (Plex Dance):

This is useful if you’re switching agents on a lot of media, in bulk. If you’re just doing it for a few series, it’s probably easier just to perform a Fix Match at the show level and manually choose The MovieDB as the agent. Doing it via Fix Match should require a Plex Dance.
Thanks for the reminder. Having the same issue as everyone else is, but for those of us who upped a new server/restored a server this weekend almost nothing is matching. I’ll give this a go.
Dude, THANK you for that reminder. Looks like doing the Plex Dance worked. Going to stick with TheMovieDatabase given how unreliable tvdb is.
