Metadata agent changes not sticking

Server Version#:1.42.1.10060
Player Version#:Latest FireTV app
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I recently upgraded the server OS and upgraded Plex to the latest version. Since then new TV series and films are not matching.

I have tracked this down to the metadata agent being set to Plex Series. Changing this to TheTVDB for TV series forces a library upgrade and rescan that fixes it, but the agent changes back to Plex Series and future new programmes don’t match.

Every time I change it it tells me the library needs upgrading - I’ve let it do that about 10 times now.

Is this a bug, or do I need to change something else?

Your server logs should show what’s going wrong.
Most likely, there’s a networking issue preventing your server from seeing Plex’s own metadata backend (e.g. due to a DNS failing to resolve their URL; in which case you could try to use a DNS like Google’s 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 or CloudFlare’s 1.1.1.1).

When you upgrade it sets the agent/scanner to plex as the legacy tvdb scanner will not work in the near future.

As tom says post your server logs, there are several things that could cause matching issues.

Ah, makes sense, “Plex Series” is the one I should be using and TheTVDB is legacy, the library upgrade is swapping them over.

I’ll pull the logs and post them in a bit.

Thanks.

Downloaded server logs are attached here.

There are a bunch of warnings from the photo transcoder and some messages about invalid fields being ignored, but | couldn’t see anything about failed connections.

I changed the DNS to my AdGuard Home server (should’ve been using that anyway) that goes on to OpenDNS. AdGuard did process some requests for Plex metadata servers and didn’t block anything.

Thanks for your help.

Can you please plex dance something, provide both the folder location and a couple of file names along with fresh logs? Ill take a look at your logs in the meantime.

I upgraded the library, removed one program (Deli Boys), and rescanned.

I then moved Deli Boys back in and rescanned again - the program didn’t match.

The containing folder is M:\TV\Deli Boys (M: is a mapped drive on the NAS), example file name is M:\TV\Deli Boys\Season 1\Deli Boys.S01E09.Shaadi Boys.mkv

Updated logs are attached.

OK so plex is seeing the media, however your naming is less than ideal. Can you do the removal and cleanup parts of the plex dance, then rename the folder to Deli Boys (2025) {tvdb-435662} restart plex and then add it back to Plex? This should point to an issue of naming or some other underlying issue.

It’s started working properly now, all the unmatched ones are matched correctly.

I don’t know what fixed it, I just restarted Plex to get the memory back. I’m sure I’ve restarted Plex since I upgraded the server but maybe not..
