Plex Series agent not finding metadata for shows that exist in TVDB

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10122
Player Version#: N/A

Finding some frustrations with the new library agents and inconsistent experiences with matching shows and finding metadata.

Example show: Revealed Death Cap Murders (New show on Stan) - available in The TVDB

The TV Porgrammes library insists on using the Plex Series metadata agent and if you don’t you get warnings everywhere about library upgrade required. The Plex Series agent is unable to find metadata for this show, while it is easily found in the TVDB. I can’t force Plex Series to find this, with TVDB ID’s or any other method.

It’s frustrating that I do not have the option to select a different metadata agent when attempting to fix match.

I don’t know what the synchronization behaviour is between Plex Metadata database and other sources like The Movie Database and The TVDB, but, it has been over a week since this show and episode became available.

My preference and feature request would be that while the primary agent for a library may be set to the newer Plex Agent’s, but, I should have the option to use an alternative agent in the “fix match” window if the default Plex Agent is unable to find metadata for the show or movie.

It’s an extremely frustrating experience of having no way to resolve the metadata match issue with the Plex Series agent because of delays on Plex side. Locking users out of methods to manually resolve this is a ridiculous implementation.

Thanks for the report, I’m asking around to see what’s going on here.

I’m seeing this behavior as well with Crowd Control, which first released over a week ago. Something to note about this particular show that could be relevant is that it was available with a different TVDB ID up until recently, so perhaps that is what causes confusion on the Plex side of things. I sadly don’t know if both IDs were available simultaneously and one was deleted due to duplication, or if the show simply changed ID for some reason.

@drzoidberg33 I also cannot get Plex to match “Revealed: Death Cap Murders (2025)”.

The show exists on tmdb & tvdb but nothing I have tried has resulted in a match.

If I try to match manually no combination of searches presents the show as an option in the search results, and I have also tried adding the tvdb/tmdb suffix to the folder title, which also has not helped. I’ve triple checked the naming convention of the media file itself and it follows the recommended conventions.

At first, like OP, I thought that there might just simply be a delay between the Plex agent scraping data from tvdb/tmdb, but it has been 6 days since the first episode aired so I suspect there is something else going on.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated

I have the same issue on «16 ukers helvete bootcamp» which have been on TVDB(439164) and TMDB(233853) for a couple years. For me it defaults to a similar TV show (16 ukers helvete) which is a bit frustrating as I have both in my library and they stack on top of eachother as different versions.

I’ve noticed the same issue with Into the Void: Life, Death and Heavy Metal. The show exists on TMDB and TheMovieDB with all its metadata and Jellyfin has no issue fetching it all but the Plex Series agent is unable find it at all. I can’t even manually search for the match, it just doesn’t show up.

Same here - I was going to post about this one in particular:
IMDB: tt35048255

TVDB: 457904

TMDB: 300417

Just as an FYI, this seems to be resolved. I created this directory in my tv library, added a dummy episode and was able to select TVDB episode ordering. Plex retrieved the episode metadata.

Confirming that the Plex Series agent is now matching the Revealed Death Cap Murders TV Show, and picking up the metadata which appears to be the same metadata from the TVDB.

Incidentally “TVDB Episode Ordering” is irrelevant to the shows metadata and show matching.

Given the number of replies to this thread, The feature request I highlighted is still pertinent, if the Plex Series agent is not successfully matching a show for what ever reason, users should be given the ability to use a “legacy” agent in the manual “Fix Match” method to look for show metadata directly in either the movide database or TVDB.

I don’t like the behaviour of locking users out of an ability to manually resolve metadata issues.

In my case, it was necessary to select TVDB ordering since the episode was matching to TMDB metadata.

@Jake6956
I’m having problems with “Into the Void” too. Even by using the tvdb ID he “Match” function doesn’t show the correct result (it shows matches but the wrong ones).
TV show: TVDB: 457904

looks like its working this morning. might have been a slow ingestion.

Yeah now I could match them too. :+1:
I guess TheTVDB was a bit slow yesterday. :snail:

Yeah, it happens. I tried dropping in a new episode of Antiques Roadshow on Monday. This episode aired the week before and was listed in TVDB but I added the episode, Plex Agent just listed it as episode 18. I expect it will match correctly in the upcoming week.

I am having this problem with Dobbelt Op - TheTVDB.com
was created 11 days ago, but still impossible to match in Plex, even with tvdb-id matching

This appears to just be a general issue with the Plex Agent, it is taking weeks to reflect changes to TMDB and TVDB. Since it is happening with both sources and other things that use the API like Trakt and Letterboxd are reflecting the changes within the normal 24-72 hour timeframe, it is clearly some issue with the Plex Agent not reflecting the changes in a timely manner.

Well, as an experiment, I created a directory in my TV library called “Double the Money (2025)”, copied a dummy mp4 file named S01E01.mp4 into it and it matched to the TVDB entry. I have my matcher set to the default Plex Agent. I did have to go into Advanced Settings and select TVDB episode ordering. While it does get the Show poster and episode title, it does not seem to pull the episode synopsis.

You are correct, there seems to have been some update since I made my post, and finally this show is being found, synopsis missing for you might be cause it is only added in Danish.

That’s what I was thinking. I also run Jellyfin on that server and it didn’t do much better. It didn’t even pick up the episode name. Since my selected language on both servers is EN, it just defaulted to “episode 1”. I have another show from Italy and the TVDB episode information is in Italian and Plex did something very similar.
