Metadata keeps getting refreshed when opening item, resulting in time out

After clicking on a movie in my library (which should result in playback or showing of the moviesheet), the metadata gets updated.

After the metadata is updated (no visible changes in the data or images) this particular item can be clicked on for a day or so, without being updated.

A day (or a few days) later it starts over again, and the metadata is updated again.

It only seems to happen with movies, not tv shows.

Depending in which player I am using, it results in a long loading time or even a time out.

- Plex Web App; it results in a long loading time (the update has to be finished and processed) but eventually the moviesheet is shown (or the movie plays).

- aTV 3 (plexconnect); this results in a time out, going back with the 'menu' button of the aTV and selecting the item again usually works as a workaround.

Issue/question:

I would really like to know why the metadata gets downloaded/refreshed everytime I click an item, because this results in a time out/server unreachable at the aTV (plexconnect).

When there is no metadata to be downloaded (so when I try again after the update), there are no issues with the aTV and it shows the moviesheet instantly. Therefor I really expect it to be the PMS who is the cause of the time out/unreachable.

Why does PMS do this? I do not need the update everytime I click an item, periodically update or automatic update upon changes would be fine for me?

And if this update is needed for PMS, is there a way around this time out?

Setup:

PMS (0.9.12.3)

Agents: The movie database (and that is the only plugin which I have checked)

Update library automatically is ticked

Partial scan is not ticked

Update library regularly is not ticked

Synology (DS213, DSM 5.2)

I know this is a slow server, but all media has been converted to mp4/m4v, so no transcoding is needed. Playback is good, so no problems with that.

Tried workarounds:

Changing the settings in the library, so not updating automatically or doing a partial scan. I have tried all combinations, not having any effect on my problem.

Changing the metadata agents, this resulted in a complete refresh of the library, but after that was finished it started over again. Also cleaned and optimized the database.

Selecting an item in my library (metadata is already there and it is correct, as are the posters)

The page starts loading and at the bottom you see it is updating and processing the metadata

After it is finished it shows the moviesheet, with (at first sight) the same metadata and posters

1. File name should be correct as the metadata is already there. And it is correct and complete.

2. Have been looking through the log files and compared them with log files of other clients (family with same setup). Only difference is that in my log file you see the update which the others don't show.

3. Very poor SQL skills, so really don't want to go there unless all other options are looked at and confirmed not to work.

4. Permissions should be ok, but will check them.

I have already optimized, cleaned the bundles and emptied the trash (and restarted the server).

Will try it with deleting the library first and adding it like a fresh, new one.

The problem now is that when I try to generate a time out, I can't.  All metadata seems to be ok now.

I don't get the 'downloading' and 'processing' informational's anymore when clicking a movie.

So either something in the settings finally started working or it has some other cause.

I have a slight feeling that it starts when I manually update the library and there are multiple movies to be added to library.

After the search is finished and the new movies are added, I know that metadata is still downloaded. Problem is that this is hours (to even a day) later and it affects the movies that already had metadata downloaded (correct) on a previous occasion.

If the problem returns, and none of the suggested solutions work I will try to post the log files and try to narrow down what causes this and why it is gone after some times.

Thanks!

Thanks, will do if the problem re-occurs.

I think you are right with the analyzing part. When I check the info it doesn’t alway show all details (like missing video or audio details). And when the metadata gets redownloaded, the file also gets analyzed. I will keep looking at the issue and as soon as it happens again I will gather all files and let you know.

Hi there !
I have exactly the same problem ! (Synology DS414)

When i refresh all metadata, everything is ok, but when i make modification (add/remove movie …) and if i click on another movie, plex re download metadata… exactly same as Storm_ryder screenshots.
Metadata seems to be still there (posters), but plex need to redownload all metadata of the movie…

Did you find the issue ?

Thx

No one has a similar case ?

Seems to be only for films, no problem with TV show.

Sadly you are not the only one:

In my opinion I hadn´t this issue with previous PMS versions (0.9.11.X)

I don’t have permission to read the content :frowning:

btw thanks for the answer !
Waiting for update, i guess is the better option…

I have this problem with my server on Raspberry Pi. Latest version.

I have this same problem with my Synology, latest Plex

same problem DS215j

I’ve got the same problem on my Ubuntu VPS, which runs a PMS with a library on Amazon Cloud Drive through acd_cli. As the library grows, Plex keeps rescanning all my media and hogging my CPU.

In my debug logs I see a lot of “[0x7f118c1fc700] DEBUG - Doing expensive tags write for ‘Movie Title Here’ because something changed.”

Any help? Thanks!

I’m running Plex Server version 1.2.7.2987 on a Mac Mini running Elcapitan. My data is on a Drobo5N network share. I’m getting exactly the same behavior described in the original post. Whenever I click a movie, I get the spinning circle and the metadata refreshes. It seems like it doesn’t ever look locally first for the data.

I’m having this issue on my server. Did anyone ever provide a viable solution to this? Or is the only “solution” that Plex will only work correctly after doing a “Refresh All Metadata”?

Thanks!
