Metadata not properly downloading for Late Show with Stephen Colbert

For the last week now, metadata doesn’t download properly for just one show: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

It appears some metadata downloads but not all of it. It seems to have a title and an airdate and that’s it. However, the title on last nights episode is listed as “2016-06-20” and that’s it. At first I thought it was just that thetvdb was slow updating the info on their end, but they have all of the metadata already entered for the next week well before the episode came out.

Hitting refresh on the episode doesn’t do anything(it says downloading metadata and then refreshing the metadata but nothing changes) but hitting refresh on the whole series causes the metadata to download correctly and the correct episode title to appear. However, I’ve had to manually do this for every episode for a week now.

It doesn’t appear to affect any other shows. The rest of them downloaded correctly except for one random episode of Ultimate Spider-Man that didn’t work and I had to refresh manually as well.

Just to provide a bit more info, the episode is named with the date rather than an episode number and when I hit refresh on the episode itself this is what is displayed in the logs:

10:34 AM Finished processing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert S01 E-1 in TV Shows
10:34 AM Loading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert S01 E-1 in TV Shows
10:34 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert S01 E-1 in TV Shows
10:34 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert S01 E-1 in TV Shows

But when I refresh the entire series it then says:

10:37 AM Finished processing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
10:37 AM Loading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
10:36 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
10:36 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows

and now the title is listed as “Alexander Skarsgard, Natasha Leggero, Ziggy Marley”

Looks like you’ve not got the file named correctly. If you fix the name to reflect the episode number (see here) then you’ll have more luck.

You can either use the date or the episode number. Both are supposed to work as per https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200381053-Naming-Date-based-TV-Shows

This naming scheme has been working properly for months. It only stopped working last week. It still works when I manually refresh the metadata on the series without renaming the file. It just seems to fail the first time metadata is downloaded.

Also, as a side note, it failed again with last night’s episode. It looks like something was changed that broke this.

Something really weird is going on. I managed to get the logs from last night when the newest episode was originally added into the library(it has the same problem):

4:40 AM Finished processing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
4:40 AM Deleted an item in TV Shows
4:40 AM Loading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
4:39 AM Library scan complete: Extra information may still be downloading from the Internet
4:39 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
4:39 AM Scanning the “TV Shows” section
4:39 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
4:39 AM Deleted an item in TV Shows
4:39 AM Deleted an item in TV Shows
4:39 AM Downloading metadata for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in TV Shows
4:39 AM Matching The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in TV Shows

Only one new episode was added and no episodes were removed from the disk. So, I’m not sure why there’s a bunch of item deleting in the logs.

Yes both formats will work but the determining factor for which to use is thetvdb.com.

By default, Plex matches against TheTVDB.com, so you should name and organize your content based on the information on that site.

How does thetvdb.com list your show, by date or by episode ?

TheTVDB lists ALL shows by episode. They don’t list by date. Even with Mythbusters where they decided to name the seasons after years it is still listed as Season 2016 Episode 1, Episode 2, etc. Not 01-26-2016.

The point of the date naming feature is that Plex will look up the air date on TheTVDB and then find the episode number listed there and put it into the database for that episode. I put both Daily Show and Late Show into my library daily with the same naming scheme. Neither of them are listed by date on TheTVDB. The Daily Show works 100% of the time. The Late Show worked 100% of the time until last week where it suddenly stopped working.

Something is wrong. It is failing to look up the episode number and associate the file with it like it is supposed to unless I manually refresh the whole series. In the past, problems like this have been caused by issues with Plex’s TheTVDB caching server or bugs in the server software that didn’t let it update properly.

It seems to have started working again after I installed the 1.0 version of the server software. Looks like it was a bug that was fixed.
